This blog will be unlike most in that I spent almost no time sightseeing during a two-week, three-stop stay in central Florida. I have a cousin who lives in Brooksville FL, an aunt who lives in Sanford FL and a friend in Interlachen FL. My plans were to visit all three, to see only one attraction and to research some of the regions I will visit before I head to Alaska in July – regions that were left uninvestigated over the winter due to my focus on Alaska. I began with a drive from I-65 RV Campground in Mobile AL to Topics RV Resort in Spring Hill FL on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. According to Google Maps, that drive is 467 miles and 7 hours 8 minutes – an exceptionally long drive by Uncle Larry’s standards. ... read more

Trying to complete our annual bucket list, our friendly foursome headed out for another journey. Where were we going? We tossed several ideas back and forth and finally decided on Tarpon Springs. We’ve been here before but it is one of our favorite places and never hesitate to go again....and again...and again. As Cory drove our black beauty on various roads in order to avoid I-75 north. He truly knew what he was doing.....we passed under I-75: completely packed with vehicles of all sorts moving like snails. The snowbirds are trying to “fly” home but because there are so many....their pace is almost none-moving. We saw a couple motor homes stuck in this massive, creeping parking lot and gave pity out our window to them. As we buzzed along, we saw signs for Weeki Wachee. Hey, ... read more

Monday or Tuesday at lunchtime has become our old Wednesday night Ale House replacement. We still love the Ale House but we love the fresh seafood and cheap prices at Bar Harbor. So off our foursome headed a week ago Monday - March 13th - our dear son Cory's 49th birthday. Happy Birthday again, Cory. Where have all the years gone? Yikes.....it makes us seem really old! Let the truth speak for itself. Our birthdays are coming up very soon. Noooooooo. No more! I did forfeit my lobster roll for fried scallops this time. Sam did, too. Nope....doesn't compare. For me, it will be the luscious lobster roll again...next time at Bar Harbor. Remember, their cooked 1 1/4 lb. lobster is only $6.99. A take home delight! Where? Just tell me where you can get such ... read more

Check ! We completed one more item on our bucket list. Wednesday took this foursome (plus Pretty Girl, Lulu) to Tarpon Springs. Three of us reminisced that we had been here years ago....I don't remember it. Of course, that doesn't mean anything. I don't remember every place and every thing we have done over these almost 52 years together (Cory does, though...what a mind!). That's why I write my blog now. Kind of like our personal diary. But everyone can read it! So, now start reading my musings for Wednesday, March 16, 2016. We knew Tarpon Springs was famous for its sponges but that's it. This is "Google" Information's about the city (remember Google is Your Friend): "The Sponge Industry helped build a Greek Community that is now famous not only for the worlds finest sponges, ... read more

Last Labor Day weekend we went to Tarpon Springs in Florida which was once known as the "Venice of the South." We were wondering whether to spend the weekend there or just go for a day trip. We decided on the latter as Tarpon Springs is only about a two hour drive from Orlando. We left Orlando at 8:40 a.m., and took Interstate 4 West first, then changed to Interstate 275 South. The town of Tarpon Springs is 115 miles or 185 kilometers away from Orlando, and it took us just a little over two hours to reach our destination. When we started in the morning, the weather was still fairly cool, but by the time we reached Tarpon Springs it was already warming up. We headed straight for the Sponge Docks which is the main ... read more

Tuesday morning we left our anchorage and continued north in the ICW. One of the prettiest places was Venice, with its beautiful water and scenic view of the Gulf of Mexico through the Venice Inlet. They have a pretty park and beach at the inlet. When we reached Tampa Bay, we turned more easterly into the Manatee River near Bradenton. Just past De Soto Point is a small cove, where we dropped anchor. We put the dinghy in the water and motored to shore, pulling the dink up onto the beach at De Soto National Memorial. We walked the path to the Visitor Center, where I got my stamp and patch and Kerry bought his National Parks Senior Pass. He was thrilled. The De Soto Natl Mem is near the site of where Hernando De Soto ... read more

Merry Christmas to everyone and hope everyone has a great holiday season. Wow, it has been a busy month and ½ since our last post. This is the first we have had any good internet service to load pictures. We arrived in Tarpon Springs Florida (Gulf Coast) yesterday and will pay for a month at this marina. They have high speed internet, YEA! As most of you know we did not get to see the shuttle launch after staying a week in Titusville. We pulled up anchor and headed south to help Carol’s mother for a month. We arrived in Lantana Florida about Dec 9th and tied up at a marina. Carol’s mother picked us up and we stayed at her home. She had a dialup connection that you had to wait 10 minutes just to ... read more

We've finally made it to Tarpon Springs, 2 weeks after leaving Apalachicola. Sara and Trevor left just after sunrise. We watched them head out the barge channel and saw them raise two sails as they turned south. We followed about half an hour later. With the wind at our backs, they were flying. We thought their heads were going to catch fire. (Sorry, family joke.) Having the waves on our stern (a following sea) made our ride a little rougher, but not bad. Mostly it just pushed our rear end around some causing us to have to oversteer. We just throttled up and then we moved more easily through the bumpy seas. As the afternoon wore on, the seas smoothed out some as the wind layed a bit. That slowed the sailboat down some, but it ... read more
