September 9, 2012 Palatka (pronounced puh-lat-kuh) is a city in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,558 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Putnam County. Palatka is the principal city of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to 72,893 residents. The city is also home to St. Johns River State College, St. Johns River Water Management District Headquarters, and Ravine Gardens State Park. Saturday morning we dawdled, then finally headed out of the marina after a quick pump-out. We hoped to beat the weekend crazies on the lake. There weren’t many boats out, but the number increased as the day went on, though they were mostly well-mannered. It was a beautiful day on the river, hot and humid, but the scenery more than made up for that. We saw several alligators in a short distance, then were passed by a runabout pulling kids on a tube. Trolling for gators, I guess. We saw more alligators sunning themselves on logs. Just past Hontoon Island we saw a lot of splashing on the side of the river and a runabout stopped and watching. Tuesday morning we got a late start from the marina. The weather was threatening, a cold front was on the way. The brown water of St. Johns River was full of white caps, making it difficult to dodge the crab traps. We would make a bend in the river and the waves would flatten out for a while, then it would open up and be choppy again. The rain was intermittent, but it never really rained hard, nor did it last long. We passed Green Cove Springs in the gray weather, knowing that it was probably quite pretty in the sunshine. We set out from the hostel the hostel this am. Started our ride about 8:30. The weather was great with a high around 72', when we started the temp was 57'. We had lots of wind in our face for most of the day. Sam said he saw on the net the wind was 15 to 20 mph. When it was in our face the riding was slow but still good. We ended up riding a total of 44.5 miles ( that .5 is important). We ended up in Palatka for the night. we chose to get a room. The show were were great. this is a dream realized:)... read more
