Lake Okeechobee KOA, Okeechobee, Florida The torrential rains in Key West finally let up and we were able to get the trailer hitched and checked out of Boyd's. It was tough to say goodbye to both Key West and Boyd's. We had a beautiful spot amid the palm trees and Key West is a terrific place to spend a few days. But it was time to continue our journey and we logged another 260 miles yesterday, traveling a bit east, but mostly north. Driving back up US 1 was just as much fun as driving down - bridges of various lengths (one is 7 miles long). And the islands are of various lengths as well - some just a hundred yards, others many miles long. All connected by a single, two lane highway. Our late start ... read more

Somehow you people up north have sent us your cold weather. You can have it back! We have wind today and temps in the high 30's this morning. Nobody is too eager to stick their noses out of their doors. About 11 I took Oscar for a walk seeking out all the sun I could find. My site here is almost all shade and it would have been wonderful if it was hot. So now I am a sun seeker. After lunch I took a little ride to see what the Caracara were up to. I had seen a huge hawk the day before and 3 deer so I was looking for most anything. I spotted a red shoulder hawk sunning, snapped a few pictures, then went on, didn't find the ones I was looking for. ... read more

Quiet Day This morning dawned with a beautiful pale pink line on the horizon where the sun was going to rise, then the clouds rolled in. It was a cloudy start but then the sun came out and the heat rose, and so did the wind. In the campground there are lots of trees and the wind was not a factor. When on the praire the wind about blew you over. Oscar and I went for a nice walk and met the neighbor down the road who is from Canada. He travels with a dog and a very fat cat that has to be tied because of the rules here. He was working on a step for the camper door and like everything when you're retired, it was a project. When we came back home I ... read more

Most of this blog will be pictures, so be sure to scrool down to see them all. The weather was perfect to spend the day, camera in hand, exploring the prairie. I had been told there was a water way down a dirt road where one could find allegators and all kinds of water birds. I took my folding chair so I could spend some time watching the birds and having them get used to me being there. There were ibus, white herons, great blue herons, little blue herons and snowey egrets. I had a great time capturing their images but didn't see any allegators. Later I found out that the allegators were really hard to see because they were in the grasses. So I'll have to go back tomorrow and hunt harder. Later on a ... read more

Little House on the Prarie This morning was a quiet one, just got up and took my time. Enjoyed coffee and the morning show then I realized I had to leave and better get packing. Didn't have a whole lot to do but it just takes time. I took Oscar around the loop, then went about stowing everything that wasn't tied down. By the time I finished at the dump, it was 11:30 and off we were. There were 12 turns in this 2 1/2 hr trip and I wondered if we were going to make a wrong one and get hopelessly lost. But not to happen, we made it just fine. I traveled through several different types of terrain and uses on the way, kept the drive really interesting. It started with phosphate mines, then ... read more

Tuesday morning we were out of the marina at 7:25 feeling good that we could make the 30 miles to St. Lucie Lock by 1:00. Except that it isn’t 30 miles, but more like 37 miles, a slight miscalculation. But luckily the currents were with us and no trains stopped us and we arrived at the lock at 12:20. It didn’t occur to us that the 1:00 opening would start with the eastbound traffic, but it did, so we didn’t enter the lock until 1:30. Once in the lock, the lockmaster dropped ropes to us which we pulled tighter as the water lifted the boats maybe 13’, which took what seemed like forever. It was 2:00 when we left the lock, but that 30 minutes did include four boats entering one at a time and each ... read more

Geo: 27.2438, -80.8328We began our trip north by taking an unscheduled trip through the western suburbs of Miami. Saw some very nice houses along the way. Once we had located the correct highway we continued to the Seminole Indian Reservation. The Native Indians here seem to be more progressive many of them owning very nice homes and there were excellent health, education and safety facilities. Quite different from what we often see in BC. We took both the air boat and swamp buggy tours. The swamp here is quite different from the Louisiana swamps. From there we continued north to Lake Okeechobee which is very large in the center of Florida. The lake seems to be the source of water for many of the coastal cities and there are large canals carrying the water. We drove ... read more
