Kerry fishing
Looks like he's hard at it. Monday, 4 February, 2013
Friday we moved to site 23 in Long Key State Park, our last move until the tenth of February. It’s a shadier spot, but not as open to the breezes. (I say breeze, Kerry says wind.) It has been a bit cooler the last several days, nice.
Saturday we went to Conch Key to see if anyone there remembers the old days when my grandparents had a cottage there. We were told the only old-timer has Alzheimer’s, so no help there. The woman I spoke with said some of the cottages could still be standing from that time, but doesn’t know for sure. I will have to look to see if I can find some pictures from back then and compare them to how it looks now.
Sunday afternoon was softball day. 27 players showed up, some new ones, but mostly veteran players. It was a good game, the seven planned innings passed so quickly that they decided to play 9.
This morning we went to Crane Point, which preserves 63 acres of Vaca Key, including one of the world’s last remaining thatch palm hammocks. It was settled by Bahamian pioneers more than
Sailboat anchored off Long Key
They anchored offshore for the night and left early the next morning 100 years ago. They have a nice little natural history museum, nature trails, the original house and a wild bird center, where they rescue, rehabilitate and release injured birds.
We also did some grocery shopping today and went to dinner with friends, Ruth Anne and Don. We’ve really enjoyed their company.
We have been spending most afternoons sitting and watching the tide coming in or going out. We’ve enjoyed watching the shore birds run up and down the beach pecking in the water and in the sea grass washed up on shore. I pick up a few shells, sea beans and coral to take back to show the kids. Kerry had found a dead cow fish that was mostly dried, and had left it on the picnic table to dry thoroughly. It had been there several days and was drying nicely. Then one night we heard a heron or egret screeching and the next morning the cow fish was gone. That bird was probably complaining that his fish was too dry.
Tonight the stars are so bright and numerous. Hard to believe we’re only a hundred miles from Miami, where on a clear dark night you may
Tennessee Reef Lighthouse
located 3 miles from Long Key be able to see half a dozen stars. This week we’re supposed to be able to see the southern cross.

You're livin' the life!
Love reading your postings! Reminds us of our trip just last year when we saw you. Wish we were back there again. Wee too enjoyed Crane Point last year and the nice museum. Have you been to the Turtle Hospital? Pretty interesting too. We're still looking at resuming the Great Loop in 2014 - working this year and saving our money! Just found out our son is on his way home from Afghanistan. Yeah! He's been over there since July and it's been a long anxious time for us. Keep in touch you two. Laurie and John
