Devant ... read more

Hello! For some reason our blog site was blocked as they suspected us to be spammers. After an email back and forth, the site has now been restored. Below are posts from our first two days pasted from Word. --- June 8, 2016 This morning, we began with a pick-up at 5:30 a.m. Though traffic was heavy, we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare and enjoyed a sit down breakfast at an Italian restaurant. Our flight didn’t take off quite on time. When the pilot said we would be taking off within the next two minutes, there were still 20 people in the aisle waiting to get to their seats. After the “flight attendants, please prepare for takeoff” announcement we sat for roughly half an hour listening to a 14 month ... read more

One day sail out of Tampa dropped us on the white sand beaches of Key West. As classical as we believed it was. Nothing like fresh Key Lime Pie! Another day sail and we're on South Beach with it's historic Art Deco buildings on Ocean Drive. Back on the ship for our 5 days at sea.....lots of naps and massages!... read more

Old Town, Key West, Florida I'm normally very good about directions and can retrace my steps easily and quickly. I also don't tend to forget things. But yesterday morning was a bit challenging and, although we joked about it all day, I must admit I am wondering if all this traveling is mixing my mind up. Or maybe I'm just getting old and can't rely on old habits as much. You see, yesterday I forgot both my phone and my car. My head? Well, its still attached, but... Here's the story: We had taken the bus into Key West Tuesday, mostly because we didn't want to have to park the car (it isn't cheap), and because we were pretty much headed to just one spot - Duval Street and Mallory Square. But yesterday, our destinations were ... read more

Duval Street and Mallory Square, Key West, Florida There's a guy on one end with a sort-of show involving sort-of acrobatic cats. He laughs at his own jokes with an exaggerated cackle that is more ridiculous than funny. We move on to the black dude with dreadlocks and sunglasses playing a pretty good steel drum. And all around you are several thousand people, all packed shoulder to shoulder, jostling for space, laughing, taking selfies, many drinking alcoholic beverages out of plastic cups. New Year's Eve at Times Square? Nope. This is every single night at Mallory Square in Key West. The party starts building an hour or so before sunset as there is a notable swell of folks heading North on Duval Street until they get to the Northern End or maybe Greene Street where they ... read more

Stock Island, Florida Keys, Florida What do you do when you suddenly have an extra day somewhere that was totally unanticipated? We still don't know how we managed to do that, but we are down at Boyd's campground with nothing planned for the day. But one of the most common activities for us on down days are naps and so we managed to get a couple of them in - we were tired but also needed to rest up for Monday's planned outing - which was a biggie. We did explore Boyd's a bit - this is glamping at its best. The number of huge motor homes is amazing and it seems that each one is also towing a boat. (If they don't have a boat, then it's a car (Smart cars are popular with these ... read more

Garden Key, Florida Dry Tortugas is one of the gems of the National Park System and is a highlight of our trip so far. For those who think Key West is the westernmost end of the keys, you have to rethink your geography. The park originally encompassed eleven small keys, although only seven of them are now above water. They are at the westernmost end of the coral reef that starts just south of Miami and runs south and west from there almost 200 miles - the third largest coral reef in the world. Known as one of the most difficult parks to get to, there are no roads here and your only means of transportation is by boat or seaplane. The park is a full 70 miles west of Key West. There are charter seaplanes ... read more

Boyd's Campground, Key West, Florida We hitched up and drove back up north out of Everglades National Park, hit US 1, and proceeded south, almost as far as it would go, 170 miles. It is a two lane road and, especially with a trailer, it isn't always easy to drive because of the traffic. But it is certainly beautiful. Basically you drive up over a high bridge where you can see miles of ocean, beaches, and greenery, then you descend on to the island and pass through residential and business neighborhoods based on each island. And you just keep doing that over and over as you go further south and west. Of course, they aren't called 'islands' here but rather 'keys' which is derived from a Spanish term that means the same thing. I'm hoping to ... read more
