Mile marker signs for every direction (4400 miles to London!) If you can survive the endless stream of cars heading into the Florida Keys, the scene that awaits you at the end of your journey is certainly worth all the brake lights and cursing that will be seen and heard along the way.
After stopping at Dunkin Donuts for breakfast again this morning (why don't they have these in California???), we set out from Miami Beach toward Islamorada, located about 27 miles south of Key Largo. The traffic wasn't too bad along the Florida Turnpike, but once we hit Highway 1, I'm fairly certain it would have been faster to park the car and walk the next 20 miles. There is a huge amount of road construction going on for about a ten mile stretch heading into Key Largo. At several points we were literally stopped for 15 minutes at a time. If we hadn't had a reservation already, I don't think we would have bothered continuing the way we were heading (not that you can turn around...you're pretty much stuck for the entire stretch). It's also a good thing I didn't have to pee along the way. There were a few cars stopped along the side of the rode

I love the fish mail box out front! and men just unzipping for all the world to see. I guess when you gotta go...!
By the time we hit Key Largo, the traffic opened up a bit and we were able to pick up some speed the rest of the way to Islamorada. We found our hotel (the La Jolla Resort), checked in, dropped off our bags and headed out on foot to explore the area. We walked down the main road (Overseas Highway) and checked out the scenery. By this time it was about 4pm and I was already hungry, so we stopped at The Whistle Stop Bar & Grill. I had a grilled cheese sandwich on rye bread with fries and about 6 cups of iced tea to beat the heat. It was a bit more overcast today (and sprinkled this morning), but also quite a bit hotter. We played some video game Golf (I lost the first game, won the second) and then headed out to a bakery down the street so I could get some key lime pie. I couldn't be in the Keys and not eat some key lime pie...it just wouldn't be right!
Side note... The Whistle Stop was playing

Our building at the La Jolla Resort the Kentucky Derby on its big screen TVs. I'd never seen it before and found it to be quite interesting, that is of course until one of the horses fell, broke its ankles and had to be euthanised. I don't think I'll be watching the Kentucky Derby again any time soon.
Each of the hotels here has its own private beach area out back, so we headed out to join the rest of our neighbors and watch the sunset. There was a man playing music and singing, people fishing off the rear dock, others having a barbeque, and us sitting in the middle of it all soaking up the scenery and feeling like this is what a vacation is all about. Until the mosquitoes started landing on me... that was my cue to head back inside for the night.
Tomorrow (depending on the traffic) we may head a bit further south, and then it's back up north again toward Fort Lauderdale!

Florida looks very blue, and the grilled cheese looks very nice. Disappointed you didn't have Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Bar and Grill :D Looks like you're having a fantastic and relaxing time with all the laid back feet shots, they makeme chuckle. Hurrah!
