There was a lot of satisfaction in dropping the anchor in Boot Key Harbour - after 1200 miles we had arrived and did not have to plan the next day's leg. From Fort Lauderdale we decided to go outside to avoid a repeat of the endless bridges we have encountered in this part of Florida. So we had a good look at Miami from the Atlantic - then on to Key Biscayne. We have had only one night in a marina in the past 2 weeks - a nice change and good for the budget as most down in this area expect $80 - 100 per night then charge extra for electric plug in and water - all in US $$ of course. Marathon is quite a gathering port for cruisers like us. There are 265 ... read more

On Saturday morning, we took a ride up the Shark River in the dingy. After that, we decided that it was time to head to the Keys. We planned to make a quick stop at Cape Sable, which is the southernmost beach on mainland Florida. We got ashore, but decided pretty quickly that despite the gorgeous shells, we just couldn't stay. The deer flies were in full bloom, and we could tell they were hungry. We strolled for shells for a few and then were on our way to Marathon. We approached the 7 mile bridge around 3 p.m. and got anchored outside Boot Key Harbor by 4 p.m. There are several other boats in the anchorage. We went to dinner at a place called Frosty's in Marathon. They had delicious fish dip and our dinner ... read more

We have had a great time sailing in the Florida Keys; the weather is warm and sunny and the water is blue and filled with lots of marine life. We saw many turtles, sting rays, and man o war on our sail down thru the Hawk Channel on our way to Key West. And there are lots of reefs to explore and great fishing along the way too. But the most surprising aspect of sailing in the Keys is how shallow the water is. Most of these beautiful small islands in the chain are surrounded by only a foot or two of water, making them completely inaccessible for the Rum Runner (which draws 6 feet). So in a way, we were disappointed with cruising here because we couldn’t explore the islands we passed and heard so ... read more

Marathon, Florida Hotel I recall a vacation once where we stayed in the Keys. We stayed in Marathon, which is on the way to Key West. We stayed at a Marathon hotel called Key Colony Bay Hotel. It was a nice little accommodation in Key Colony right by the water. If you get a chance you should stay there.... read more

” Everything is connected to everything else” Aldo Leopold January 23, Sunday. After breakfast, and Mass, we found a lovely motel/suite to “veg-out” and watch the Super Bowl play-offs. The Continental Inn is located in Marathon, at the Key Colony on the West Oceanside, just beautiful. Key Colony is a small island and very walkable with magnificent mansions, hotels, and condos. Bob was “bummed-out” with the performance of the Steelers. ... read more
