Wow! What a tremendous day here in Key Largo. After a good rest from our long drive and a great continental breakfast here at Dove Creek Lodge (oatmeal, fruit and yogurt, fruit kebobs) we were off figuring out the best way to snorkel today. There are many different charters you can take out, so deciding can be a bit overwhelming, but we decided to go with one called Keys Diver. We signed ourselves up for the 12:15 boat that would take us to three different spots on the Atlantic Ocean off Key Largo. We met the group and our Captain Kevin and Divemaster Tim where we signed in and were given the run down of how the day would work. Captain Kevin and Divemaster Tim were extremely professional and their expertise shone through from the very ... read more

It was a change of pace today. While our other days on the trip have generally been action packed, with hiking, walking, tours and lots of stops, today was just one location, and lots of relaxing. We went to the John Pennekamp State Park, and enjoyed time on there beaches. It was anice opportunity to swim, snorkle a bit and lie on a towel and read in the shade of a tree. The first beach you encounter at Pennekamp is Cannon beach. We stayed an hour or two at Cannon beach. It is a rocky and hard to walk on beach, but there are trees to find shade under, and some remnants from a Spanish ship wreck about a hundred feet from shore to snorkle out to. There are a number of sunken cannons and a ... read more

So, we had a long drive today. 10 hours. Wow....that is long. Through all of Georgia, and the entire length of mainland Florida. We departed Savannah at 8:20 am, arriving at the hotel at about 6:00. It was a tedious, not scenic and tiring drive (the downside of a road trip). However, the Dove Creek Lodge is amazing. Very hard to find, very, but gorgeous. We have a view over the Ocean, with palm trees, hammocks and docks in the view, along with a local seafood restaurant and patio in view as well. So tropical, so fun, so beautiful. We both love it. And the room is great as well. Minimal service, but nice. It is a little more self serve than the MArshall House, but great. We had dinner at a fun place called Mrs. ... read more

We drove from Miami Beach down to Key Largo, mainly using the interstates. The GPS system we hired from the car hire company is proving invaluable, at a reasonable rate of $12 per day. The main thing you notice about American Roads are how large they are. There can be up to 5 or 6 lanes, and people stick to them. We made good time to Key Largo, and found a visitors information centre in the town before Key Largo, known as Redland. They reccommended that as it was presidents day weekend, and all the hotels would be fully booked and if they weren't, would be overcharging, that we try to find a local hotel around there. Luckily, we managed to find a Travelodge motel at a reasonable rate with only a few rooms left. Once ... read more

Tonight it was key lime pie at Mrs. Mac's Diner. Karen rated the pie at only 5.5. It just wasn't as good as the others. More later. -Happy Diving... read more

We dove today! The weather cooperated a little more today than the past two days. While the seas were a little calmer, only 2-4 foot swells, the visibility had deteriorated some. I at least have some pictures of Karen and Katy in the water. I also will post one of the dive boat to show how it was pitching quite a bite while attached to the mooring line. At least we all made two dives today the first 35 minutes and the second 45 minutes and both down to about 30 feet. Tomorrow will be our last dive day so hopefully it will be calmer still. There were supposed to be storms rumble through here today, but so far that hasn't happened. Well we need to get cleaned up and ready for dinner. Tonight we are ... read more

The hunt continues for the best key lime pie in Key Largo. This evening we had dinner with the rest of the dive group at Hobo's. The food was good, not great. The portion size was enormous. I had a salad that must have been served on a trash can lid! After dinner Karen, the key lime pie expert tried Hobo's version. The presentation was a little lacking after Ballyhoo's version, and the taste also didn't quite measure up earning Hobo's key lime pie a 5 out of 10. At least we are being productive on this trip. - Happy Diving... read more

Dive 1 is in the books, sort of. We awoke to a beautiful sunny sky and warm temps. While we were waiting in the lobby for the group we overheard people commenting on the weather forecast and the sea swells. We also noticed that some of the boats had cancelled their trips. This didn't bode well for us. When we arrived at the boat and got everything loaded the captain did confirm that there were 4 to 6 foot swells and that the original spot we were supposed to dive had poor visibility so a second spot was now planned. The trip took 30 minutes to arrive at the new location and it was indeed ROUGH! By the time we got anchored Karen was hugging the trash can in no condition to dive. She insisted ... read more

We are getting ready to turn in for the evening as we are to meet the group at 7am to make our way to the dock. Weather permitting we are scheduled for two dives tomorrow morning. I'm not sure just where yet, but anywhere would be fine. I have attached two picks of our dinner. We ate at Ballyhoo's this evening which is a very nice very small seafood restaurant that is popular with the locals. Karen and I both had dishes based on red snapper. Katy on the other hand decided, as is pictured, to have a meal from the farthest place possible away from Key Largo so she had snow crabs from Alaska. I must admit though that they were very good. I must give a special nod to the jalapeno corn bread ... read more
