We appreciated the increasingly warmer weather as we traveled from Slidell to Fort Myers area. Our destination was Riverbend Resort and a visit with longtime friends Sandy and Bob Brenner who are owners in this lovely RV park. It is located 17 miles east of FM, out far enough to feel like being in the country, kind of like Gun Lake. We also met up with Gay and Jerry Hoover from SW Michigan and Sue and Joe Geshel from Okemos who also have a winter place in Fort Myers. Otherwise in our week there we enjoyed partying and shopping with the Brenners and friends, exercising in the pool, (okay, laying bedside the pool) and regaining our energy. This is a slice of heaven for the Brenner's and will be on our list of places to revisit. ... read more

The alarm went off, apparently... several times, in fact. It's definitely a good thing I was at home with Mom last Saturday night, who woke me up at 4:30 the next morning; otherwise I might have missed my flight to Florida with the orchestra. So, waking up in time for the flight was a good start to the week. We (approximately 40 of us) flew into Orlando and got there at about 10:00 (Florida time.) As it was my first time in a state east of Illinois, I was pretty excited. The weather was a complete 180 from Minneapolis's weather, so that was fun. Since we had to wait for a few hours before we could check into our hotel for that night, we all got on our tour bus and were dropped off at the ... read more

After 6 weeks in Sarasota, my time there was up and I decided to visit my friend Jen as a stopover on the way home. She is a friend from Boston and now lives in Ft. Myers, a scant 90 minute drive south from Sarasota. We arranged to meet on Monday afternoon at a halfway point near Port Charlotte, where my aunt and grandma dropped me off and she picked me up. I said good-bye to my family, not knowing if I would make it back to Sarasota before heading home a week or so later. Jen and I drove back to her house, along with the dogs, making for an interesting drive. Sierra, her black lab mix, mostly had her head out the back windows while Deuce, the beagle, wavered between that and standing in ... read more

We will be here in Cypress Woods Park, Fort Myers for about a week, and then fly home for Christmas. There is something about Floridians - native or transplants - that makes them love to decorate for Christmas. We have never seen so many beautiful lights and displays; both on public buildings and at private homes, and on boats, and outlining RV awnings! Last night we decided to try Fort Myers Beach - which held true to our previous image that it is a bit of glitz filled with tee-shirt shops on a nice beach. That is until we walked to the far end of Old San Carlos Street to the inland side of the island. There were several marinas and restaurants including a nice waterfront restaurant, Mantanza’s. We happened upon the end of a very ... read more

Firstly, an apology. There aren’t any photos attached to this blog, as regardless of how much a world traveller I become, regardless of the life experience that attaches itself to me, I am still quintessentially ‘Erin’. I did take my camera to Florida, had it with me almost everyday, but didn’t take a single photo. I couldn’t find me battery charger, so wanted to conserve it as much as possible. And when it was perfect photo moments, I was too absorbed to remember to actually take any. I will get better, I promise. Though I think the trip was somewhat jinxed, if my flight patterns are anything to go by. My flight leaving was ridiculously early, so I ended up being dropped off at the airport at midnight, and found a vaguely comfortable seat to curl ... read more

It seems like everyone has some kind of daily adventure in the Internet world. Email, Blogs, News, Sports, Music. We love having access to all that cool stuff. We love getting away from it all now and again too. It keeps our bare feet firmly planted in the sand I guess. For the next month, this travel blog will be our main digital lifeline. You should be able to read updates on our travels, see a few pictures and leave us messages. We wish you all could be here with us! ... read more

Baseball Spring Training Florida Last spring a friend of mine invited me down to Sanibel Island to hang out while his wife was in London. I had some vacation time so I took it, plus I hadn’t seen him in a long time. I booked a Fort Myers hotel at the Best Western and called him up. He informed me that some baseball teams were training in Fort Myers, so he headed over to my Best Western rooms in Ft Myers. I never knew that the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins have spring training in Fort Myers. It was quite a treat walking around downtown and spotting some famous faces. Afterwards we headed back to... read more

Fire Ants, Ruby the Sewer Hose Support Seller & a Jar of Adolph’s I got into fire ants. Never felt a thing, which I will explain later. I began to itch like the dickens and couldn’t figure out the cause until some Floridians met casually spied the giant welts and said, “Oh, you got into fire ants.” Some said, “Squeeze the welts until the “poison” seeped out.” Others said, “Suck out the venom as if treating snake bite.” Still others advised, “spit on them,” “black coffee enemas,” “eye of newt dissolved in Clorox,” and “Leave them alone.” Eventually all was forgotten and the “bites” stopped their horrible itch. Some months later, while shopping for sewer hose supports - which I will explain if you ask - at an RV-Mart World store. Ruby, a full timer ... read more

We loved our RV park, Cypress Woods, in Fort Myers, Florida. The "lots" are all owned - similar to a condo scenerio. When not in use the owners can put their lots into a rental pool (that would be us!). Because they are "owned" there is a great deal of pride taken in landscaping the individual lots. The look is wonderful. The RVs are often interspersed with attractive, compact "manufactured" homes along winding streets so the total effect is like a neighborhood. A little "sanitized" but a nice balance to some of our funkier destinations. One of our reasons for picking Cypress Woods for us was that they have the facilies to store the RV when we fly home for business and family holidays. We knew it would be nice, but it exceeded our expectations. Two ... read more
