Jan. in Fort Myers was good. We had a few cool days & nights, but mostly it was Sunny and 75-80’s during the day and 60’s at night.People we had met last year were glad to see us back and we met a lot of new people as well. We had coffee & donuts every Tues. morning, bingo every Wed. evening, a campfire every Friday evening, a pot-luck dinner, an ice cream social and to end the month a ‘welcome back’ party (funny since we were leaving). ..Jim managed to find flea-markets and yard sales every Tues, Wed, Thurs., Friday & Saturday. We even managed to ‘set-up’ at one of the flea-markets near our RV park, on one Sunday and again the following Friday, Sat & Sunday. Jim did quite well selling coins & silver ... read more

On the road again! On the road again! :D This trip is going to be nonstop for the next 2 weeks and I love it! Seeing Alex again has been wonderful. She's a wonderful person doing great things and I'm so proud of her. The whole reason behind this road trip is to get her up to Buffalo, NY so she can start her PhD program in PT. I can just tell that she is so passionate about this path and that many people will benefit from her knowledge and heart in the future. We left her home state of Florida this morning and have already gotten into minor mishaps. Google maps doesn't notify you when you should make a new move and we missed an exit. So as a result we ended up passing through ... read more

Fort Myers Busch Gardens wore me out, so I deliberately took a light day today. I went to Ft. Myers. The town was founded as a cattle port trading with Havana, but it has since become a haven for retirees. Given when I got in, the first place I went was lunch. I had it at the Tropic Café, which is a classic lunch spot serving cheap American food. The owners know the regulars by name, and the waitresses call people “honey”. Given that it was midday on a workday, I was the youngest person there. The food was pretty good, especially for the price. After lunch, I explored downtown. Ft. Myers calls itself the “City of Palms”, and sure enough there were hundreds of them downtown. All of them, it turns out, were deliberately planted. ... read more

(on a Greyhound going N from Ft Meyers to St Petersburg) Still on a Hound and hopefully this entry will not be as long as the last one. The bus trip from the Keys left Key West at 8.'15am and it’s a 4 hr trip back to Miami. The cash price for this (web is cheaper) is $49 so I think I ill get my money out of the $439 30 day pass. We had some slowish traffic delays on the way back due to single lane highway and Rotary event/fair somewhere along the way and traffic really banked up. The Keys is a pretty scenic drive, mostly when you are crossing the bridges between them on the Overseas Highway – some of these are distinctly not just causeways and are in fact very long over ... read more

The second camping spot I stayed in (2 nights), recommended by my travel guide, really paid off. The following are the ratings (remember, it’s a scale with 5 being tops), plus my commentary: Beauty: 5 stars, Yep, it was beautiful. Privacy: 4 Hmm… maybe a 3, but I camped on a busy weekend so I had a lot of neighbors… Spaciousness: 5, Yep, plenty of space between camp sites. Quiet: 4, No, maybe a 3, I heard lots of road noise both nights. Security: 5, Yep, I felt very safe. Cleanliness 5, Yes, super clean. So, here is what sounded really good when I started reading about Caloosahatchee Regional Park Campground: “The walk-in tent sites and recreational opportunities should serve as a model for other tent-camping destinations.” So true… My thoughts: If you never leave home ... read more

We stopped here on the way to Pensacola, FL and spent several hours exploring the two estates. Thomas Edison bought his estate with 13 acres and two homes that were built. His original plan was to share it with his good friend and business partner Ezra Gilliland who bought the house and 4 acres that were on the south end of the property. Soon after Edison discovered that Mr Gilliland had sold rights to his inventions for far more than he had told Thomas Edison. It was a descrepancy amounting to over $ 100,000 which was a huge amount in the late 1800s. They fought and disolved the partnership. A number of years and several owners later found the south property sold to Henry Ford who was a close friend of Edison and a former worker for ... read more

I can't begin to speak of the recent changes in my life. Being unemployed is very new to me and a little nervewracking, but I suppose it won't be hard to get used to once my feet hit the Caribbean sand. Though I am almost packed and will be embarking on my journey in less than 24 hours, I think I am still a bit in shock mode. I think excitement is still my #1 emotion, though I definitenly go through times of apprehension and panic. Thankfully these are few and far between. For all of those wondering, no, I haven't gone crazy and I'm not trying to rebel against anything. I got bit by the travel bug as a young child (thanks Dad & Mom!) and I hope I will never get that out of ... read more

Whew, I'm almost a week behind... We got back to my mother's house in Miami Springs on Saturday and got caught up on laundry and other things, including my brother's 54th birthday. Kerry lucked into finding 2 nights available back down in the Keys at Curry Hammock, just north of Marathon and grabbed the reservations. So Wednesday morning, with my mother in tow, we headed back down to the Keys. Curry Hammock is a small state park at mile marker 56.2, with only 25 campsites, but it is right on the Atlantic Ocean. That first evening we got a beautiful sunset, not over the water, but reflected in the water. The next morning we headed first to Conch Key, which is a little north of Curry Hammock, to see if Mom could recognize any of the ... read more

Thurs Jul 9, 2009 Dad and I woke up at 4:30 to get me to the airport on time. Even so, I nearly missed my flight. My pocket knife was still in my purse, unbeknownst to me, and so I set off the security. In the end, I had to pay some ungodly figure to mail the thing home and made it to the gate just as the attendant began paging me. However, I made it to Cincinnatti without further mishap and met up with my cousin, Jess Claudio. It was good to catch up with her: she had driven down to Cinci over the course of several days, staying with friends from school, and we were both excited to be heading off. Rob Kaderly picked us up in Fort Myers, took us to his home ... read more
