Florida’s Gulf Coast – Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota We have spent the last two days watching the rain from our room in a small hotel in Fort Lauderdale – very Irish weather here in Florida! We were saddened to return Rudy V to its owners. We had grown very comfortable to our nomadic mobile home life on the road. We had driven slowly across Florida from Naples on the Gulf Coast, through the Big Cypress National Park and Everglades to Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic Coast along Highway 41, also known as the Tamiami trail, the previous day. That’s where we stopped to take the photos of the basking alligators and get a genuine fright when two of them crashed into the water toward us a moment after taking the photo previously posted. They moved ... read more

We took a little explore of Fort Myers’ River District on a recent Sunday afternoon. Downtown has undergone some cool transformations making it very attractive. We avoided the many parking garages and valet parking opportunities and pulled the Jeep into a free space along the street. The annual boat show was in progress and the town was hopping. We ordered a pitcher of sangria at Los Cabos Cantina at 2226 First Street. We had a lunch date over in North Fort Myers so didn't order food; but the menu offers what looked like great Tex Mex cuisine. Our sidewalk table was a great vantage point for people watching and taking in the hustle/bustle of the palm tree lined street. It not yet Thanksgiving but the streets were beautifully dressed with green garland and red velvet bows; ... read more

Arrived safe and sound with no major traumas or delays. Long days journey into the evening warmth of Fort Myers, Florida to receive an absolutely fantastic welcome from Pauline and Nigel. What a great sign it was that welcomed me..... large green and beautifully decorated! Thank you both, such an awesome welcome. Day one was terrific starting with an incredible American breakfast at Marti's. Then on to Sanibel island and to the Ding Darling Nature Reserve. I was bowled over, so many incredible birds, my new binoculars (thank you Ally, Alice and Flo!) were put to good use: pelicans, herons, roseate spoonbills, leaping fish, ospreys and so much more. BUT also not one but two alligators. A rare sight now at the reserve so seeing two was amazing. They are fearsome creatures close up and boy, ... read more

Day 12 May 15, 2013 Didn’t sleep a wink, neither did Chris. So I got up super early and when the cab came at 6 am to take them to the airport, I was packed and ready to go. I figured with such an early start I would miss a lot of traffic (traffic in Key West sucks) and it would be a little cooler. I did miss the traffic; I found it interesting that there were a tremendous number of cars going south toward Key West. I assume that not everyone who works on Key West lives there. The ride up the Keys was as bad as the other three times I rode up or down the Keys. If I ever go back to Key West (doubtful) I will fly. The weather today was absolutely ... read more

Both Nicole and I started this trip sick, which is an always fun plane ride (I'm sure I infected half of the passengers on the plane, youre welcome). We started off by laying at the beach and of course we set up next to a group of 18 year-olds who were hammered and beligerant by 2 in the afternoon. So we decided to grab drinks of our own, since were in the south I had no choice but to drink Yueng-Ling (Budweiser of the south). Then we swindled our way onto one of the charter boats for some night fishing. We set out like 2 hours during the sunset which was nice. We were able to catch some grouper and snapper fish and a bunch of other odd looking fish that I cant pronounce. We did ... read more

Boston Red Sox Game - Thursday – March 15th Hello from the Cardinal Travel Tour. We officially joined the tour yesterday evening, but today was the first real event. We started the day with breakfast. Embassy Suites provides a complimentary comprehensive breakfast each morning. Sadly we started at the serving stations and did not recognize there was also a window where you could get your breakfast prepared to your tastes. Today was good but from now on we will have really great breakfasts. Today was a “road game” and we had to catch the bus at 10:00 for our trip to Fort Meyers. The bus ride took about 3 hours, so we are getting a bit tired of buses, but we spent the time chatting with our fellow fans, and watching some ancient reruns ... read more
