ARRIVAL IN FLORIDA/MIAMI/POMPANO Seit meiner Ankunft vor 4 Wochen hier in Pompano Beach (nach einem kleinen Marathon durch Oesterreich um den Flieger in Wien zu erwischen) hier ein kleines Resumee: Der allererste Eindruck war, dass die Leute uuuunglaublich hilfsbereit und entgegenkommend sind. Selbstverstaendlich haben sie eine gewisse Vorliebe fuer Europaerinnen :-) … wie wohl an vielen Orten dieser Erde. Ich kam allein im Haus an und bin erst einmal nur herumgesprungen und hab’ mich gefreut. So einen dekadenten Lebensstil wie hier werd' ich wohl nicht mehr so schnell fuehren. Jeden Bloedsinn, den man in einem Haus finden kann, ist vorhanden. Nur auf Jacuzzi und Pool wurde verzichtet, da die Strasse runter ohnehin gleich der Strand ist. Many cruisers avoid this part of the ICW by going "outside" to avoid all the bridges. Some open on the 1/2 hour, others every 20 minutes, others on request or when there are enough boats waiting to make it worthwhile. Yesterday we had 18 bridges to get through and making 30 miles took us all day. Nasty weather removed the option for us to go outside. We treated ourselves to 3 nights in a marina in old Fort Lauderdale - 2 miles off the ICW, up the New River. Nice spot with a riverwalk, restaurants and a big Publix for provisions. The opulence all around us is stunning - homes that look more like resorts and huge boats are everywhere. Megayachts and even gigayachts (a new concept for us!) throw huge wakes that can cause havoc ... read more

I'm in the comfort of my condo writing this...getting ready for my trip to India. I have so many foods to buy on my list...canned tuna, bags of nuts, peanut butter crackers, raisins, powerbars, etc. And don't forget the disposable underwear. One of my friends even recommended I bring clothes that I don't mind throwing away like old sneakers, shirts, shorts and just to leave them in the hotel after wearing a few days. I'm glad Steph pushed us to go camping in Alaska in August. That at least got me somewhat ready for this trip. Like being scared I was going to be eaten by a bear in the middle of the night b/c I left my cherry-flavor lipgloss in the tent. I'm so excited for the trip but also a bit freaked out by ... read more
