When we woke up in the middle of the night to severe storms with lots of lighting, thunder and hard rain (and a very scared 6 month old puppy!), we didn't think the first day of our trip was starting off so well. However, at day break the sun was peaking through the clouds and we felt sure that today would be a good one - which, indeed, it was. When I actually woke up, I was filled with an incredible sense of gratitude for many things: 1) that we have the resources to make this trip possible; 2) that Bowen and I are both healthy enough to make this trip together; 3) that my mother (aka Gaga) has recovered so well; and 4) that our kids, grandkids, and extended familes are doing well. The, as ... read more

Terrible beginning to the trip, in that I had set the alarm for 5:30 am but somehow managed not to switch it on properly. We awake in a panic at 6:34 for a pickup by my son at 6:45. No time even to eat. The wife and I are not on speaking terms by the time we leave the house at 7:20. The previous evening I had done the online check-in for our West Jet flight. For reasons that were mysterious at the time, the system would only allow me to complete the check-in for myself, not for Vi. When we arrive at the airport, we find that Vi has apparently been chosen at random for a comprehensive security check throughout the entire process. Bad news? No, because once we hit the very long security screening ... read more

Tomorrow we start our first "adventure" trip with Dan and Marilyn Flaherty since our trip to the Bahamas last winter. Not too many people would call a trip to the Bahamas an adventure trip, but every trip we make with Dan and Marilyn is an adventure, trust me. This trip should be more interesting, at least for me and hopefully for all four of us. I've been on a sail boat only once on Lake Michigan on a friend's boat many years ago. Ever since I learned to fly at Southern Illinois University, I've wanted to learn how to sail. I think I'll get a pretty good lesson on this trip. We're chartering a 38' Catamaran along with the captain and his wife. They are based on Marathon Key and will be meeting us at Key ... read more

Dateline: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida WHOA! After an amazing two fun and restful weeks on Balboa Island near Los Angeles, we were thrown into a whirlwind of activity for the next 38 hours ;-) Before leaving Balboa we walk along the harbor, greeting dogs and “saying” good morning to pelicans and the Orange Coast Community College crew teams as we head to Starbucks on the main street. We sit and people watch. We hate to leave. After walking back to the house, we finish tidying up and head north about 6 miles to drop off our car at an RV storage park. When we arrive we take our luggage into the office to wait for a cab and are immediately greeted by a flying, bouncing black fur ball of a dog named Lucy. Lucy is a couple ... read more

Today brings to an end our incredible, extraordinary journey. The glorious voyage is over. Now it becomes a joyous memory. What an excursion it has been. Thanks for going along with us through my rambling epistle. You are always such welcome and good company. Last night, we placed all our suitcases outside our room in the hallway. One of the comedians we saw on this ship trip said: "When you board the ship, they tell you to lock your door and use the safe. Then, when it's time to leave, they tell you just to put all your luggage outside your room in the hallway!" lol. Still in cruise ship mode and not missing a beat, we made our faithful march to the dining room for one last meal: a big breakfast onboard the largest cruise ... read more

Day 2 & 3 Blog – Ft. Lauderdale Wednesday and Thursday saw us exploring some of the history of this city and some of the natural sights offered in the Everglades National Park. On Wednesday we took ourselves off on a 5.33 kilometer walk (Michael said it didn’t look far on the map (ha!), but I did make it. B.) into an area call Las Olas which is along the New River. This area is part of the historical center of the city. When we started out the temperature and humidity were pleasant, but after the 5+ K walk we sure felt the effects of both the temp and humidity. We stopped for lunch at an Italian Restaurant and enjoyed an excellent lunch at a curbside table. Sufficiently refreshed we ambled over to the Stranahan House ... read more

Day 1 – Ft. Lauderdale – Feb. 4, 2014 Well we made it without any incidents or any weather delays. We left Toronto this morning at 7:40 a.m. and arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on time 11:05 a.m. and in the process we went from -5°C to 25°C. We left deep snow piles to encounter large sandy beaches. The first four photos emphasize the point. The change in weather conditions also meant that I lost an immediate 4.5 kilos of excess clothing weight, that is how much my full winter gear, boats, parka, gloves, scarf, hat weigh. We caught a taxi to our hotel checked in and then went out to explore the area. After getting a quick bite of lunch we took the Jungle Queen Riverboat Cruise which takes you on a site seeing tour of ... read more
