Today we go to the Everglades. I booked the tour with the hotel concierge when we first arrived at the hotel. We are due to be picked up from the hotel reception at 09:45. We are picked up a little late and taken to downtown Miami, and loaded onto a smaller coach that will take us to the Everglades. It takes about 45 minutes in the coach and we arrive at Gator Land. We are given a tour number and have to wait around for about 30 minutes before our number is called and we board the air boats, these are the boats with ahuge fan at the back that propel us through the swamps. Some of the time we need to wear ear plugs as the boats tend to be rather NOISY. The ride takes about 30 minutes. And despite being billed as a chance to see the swarm wildlife, we see absolutely bugger all. With the possibly exception of an alligator that was pointed out to us, but it could quite easily have been a log!
After the boatride there is a show where we actually see some wildlife, albeit in captivity. The show is very entertaining and
we see scorpions, large toads, skunks and of course - alligators. There is an opportunity to have your photograph taken with an alligator(with its jaws taped up!) at the end of the show - but Di declines!
There is a cafe and souvenir shop selling all things aligator, most of it a bit tacky. The cafe sells gator sandwiches, gator burgers etc. etc. Which might go some ways to explain why we didn't see too may alligators on the boat trip - the buggers are eating them all!! (I thought it was supposed to be the other way round?) The coach is picking us up again at arouund 13:00. So we have a bit of a wait in the heat and there isn't really too much to do once you have been on the boat trip and seen the show. The coach eventually arrives and we head back to Miami. The driver does not hang around, and we are glad to get back to the hotel and get off
We are back for about 14:00 and we have planned to spend the rest of the day on the beach. We make our way down there, get some sunbeds, towels,
a bucket of beers, order some lunch, and are just getting settled when spots of rain start to fall. There is some thunder and a little lightning and the wind gets up. We stick it out and the storm seems to miss us and it turns out to be a nice afternoon. We sunbathe, have a paddle, and do some snoozing until about 17:00 when we make our way back to the hotel room.
We are feeling a bit lethargic, and it takes a while before we make the effort to get showered and changed and make our way out for dinner. We go to Espanola Way, where there are quite a lot of nice restaurants. We eat Mexican again, I have Enchillada and Di has Steak Tacos again, we also get a pitcher of Margaritas.
We then go to the I love liquor store for a bottle of wine and have a drink in our room watching the Royal Jubilee Concert on TV, and then call it a night.
