Had a wonderful but Cold day in New Orleans yesterday centered, as you would expect, around food! Tuesday night we had Shrimp Etoufee and Shrimp and Okra gumbo at a local seafood restaurant and Wednesday started with Beignets and Cafe Au Lait at Jackson Square followed soon thereafter by Muffalettas at the Central Grocery Store, the creator of the muffaletta. We headed to Destin afterward for a rainy drive to Florida. Found a great seafood restaurant (oops, food again) to share a combo plate with oysters, shrimp, clams and fish. Yum!! This morning walked to the most amazing white sand beach ever, still cold and windy, but the view absolutely magnifico! Getting ready to head out to see what we can find. There is a National Antique Festival going on so we will fit some antiquing ... read more

After a morning spent in New Orleans, we made Destin tonight around seven. On the way into town, we found a great local retaurant located directly on the beach. We shared a great seafood platter along with beer and wine. The final approach to Destin was tedious! We had 40 miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic and stop lights about every half mile. Still, it was great to finally make it to Destin. The rain had continued, but the temperature was finally comfortable in the 60's! Our camp site (or parking spot for Stormy) is great. Just a few feet from the beach, very secluded and private, yet right in the middle of Destin! The park was an old family estate that was deeded to the State of Florida on the condition that it be used as a ... read more

The white sands of Destin Beach contribute to this area being ranked #2 in the country for beach destinations. We're camping at Topsail State Park in Santa Rosa, Florida. You can walk or ride a bike the quarter mile to the beach from the campground or take a tram. No cars allowed. Tom eyeballed wildlife that we were unsure about. The park ranger assured us that the "red headed skink" was not venemous. I felt sorry for the guy as he looks like his legs were put on backwards. He was hanging out at the wheelchair ramp in the dunes so..........hmmmm. This area is home to the Blue Angels. We would like to spend more time here but we want to get to central Florida before the weather gets too hot. We stopped in Bushnell at ... read more

Friday, 3 December, 2010 We did get out yesterday morning with sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures. Sara and Trevor finally were able to throw up their sails for most of the day. I think they mostly motor-sailed, as the wind was not sufficient to move them with any speed. But with the sails up and the motor running, they made pretty good time. We stopped for the night in Ft. Walton Beach at the City Dock, which was free, a wonderful thing to be. We had just finished tying up, when up from the parking lot came my cousins Gena, Bob, Cathy and Bill. Sara and Trevor arrived a few minutes later and rafted up on our port side. After tours of the boats and cool beverages, we sat and visited for a while. Then ... read more

October 29, 2009 Surprise! Today we left New Orleans heading for Destin Florida. On the way we passed through Mississippi…and here is the surprise…Mississippi has some of the most beautiful cost line that we’ve ever seen! I had no idea!! White sandy beaches, palm trees…I thought I was in Florida…wait until you see the pictures! We bought sandwiches and stopped at a rest stop to eat…and that’s where Professor Kennedy gave his impromptu discussion on…of all things…birds. While we were eating, a couple of black birds were hopping around, hoping for a little snack, no doubt. One of us wondered aloud what kind of birds they were. That’s when John spoke up and said “They’re Tennessee Warblers”. We said “really?!!! (We were in Alabama)And he said “Oh yeah…they’re indigenous to this area”. We didn’t believe him ... read more

This morning we woke up to the sound of (dads imitation) "cry cry I don't want to get in my swimsuit! Spank spank spank." we then woke up and headed to the beach. We hung out there all morning and then ate lunch to the room and headed back down. I had another virgin piña colada. Then around 3 the storm that was supposed to have been here all week finally hit. It started pouring, so we headed to the outlet mall. Connor was so exited he almost peed himself when we went to the Underarmour store and he got quite a few new shirts including one entertaining one that says                   " Underarmour" on his butt.  Caleb wanted to go to Calvin Klein because he needed ... read more

We took our breakfast on the balcony again and decided to go to Shell island. Dad heard about it on the Internet and apparently was an island just filled with shells. Mom wasn't excited, but we  made the 1 hour long drive to Panama City to catch the ferry. Once we got there, we drove around, lost, for 30 minutes thanks to iPhone map. We finally found a old rickety wooden motel that rented pontoon boats to get to shell island. So we all reluctantly got on the old boat loaded down with all our stuff. We drove out into the bay saw wild sting rays! We did not go swimming. We made it to the small island and stepped out off the anchored boat onto a patch of sea grass, which is like underwater soft ... read more

We started off the day eating cereal on the balcony overlooking the ocean. We then got ready, and headed to the pool. It was very relaxing and a perfect beach day. We then headed up to the room for some pb&js. After that, Dad decided to bury the boys in the sand. They each dug a hole, sat in it, and waited for dad to throw sand on them. Caleb was quickly buried, but of course dad and connor began their typical intense conversation. Which started with Connor moving in his hole and criticing dads burying and ended in dads agressive burying. A typical dad and Connor day at the beach. Then i gave Mounded up the sand on Connor and gave him a sand-bikini. (we took pictures) Today I went deeper into the water, ... read more

This morning we woke up at Gilmore Girls inn and tried to move to our Hilton, where we were staying the rest of the week. We couldn't check in yet so we stopped by 'Alvin's Tourist Trap' or as the sign said ' Tropical Department Store.' we bought a couple boogie boards, then we were headed to the beach! Hilton let us use the beach and would call us when our room was ready. So we went to the beach and our boogie boards were almost immediatley taken. Welcome to Destin! Around 1 we were leaving to fast food and dad got in line to check on our room, the boys predictably got into yet another cat fight. The rest of us pretended not to  know them. We ate at fastfood. We then headed back ... read more
