Michael and I left for Daytona Beach on July 15, 2001. We had 5 days together. That was the main thing, father and son sharing an experience. I wanted Michael to see Florida as kids in his age group have. We went to the beach and got in the ocean. Michael bought a board which he surfed on. We collected shells at night. We saw crabs in the sand. We stood on the balcony and watched the waves. Storm clouds rose. It rained. We drove over to Orlando. Michael got tee shirts at the Hard Rock Cafe. We drove south to the Kennedy Space Center. We took the tour. It consisted of the Space Shuttle, Apollo program and International Space Station. We went to Cocoa Beach. Michael got a tee shirt from Hooter's. A girl signed ... read more

We're sitting in Daytona Beach International airport waiting for our connection to Atlanta. This does not seem very international to me, but I know there are some strange bedfellows in the whole secessionist movement, and maybe something happened while I wasn't paying attention. From Atlanta, world city of international intrigue, or at least strippers, from what I hear, it's a nine hour + flight to Madrid. Not looking forward to that, but at least they give you plenty of leg room on the plane and when I see the professionalism and thoroughness of the TSA, I am confident that there will be no tomfoolery going on. Or hooliganism. Well, obviously I have nothing important to say, just getting through some pre-travel jitters. I would like to mention that I was monumentally disappointed with my previous entries ... read more

Hello Hello, We have had a great day today. We picked up a hire car this morning and let the kids sleep in. It was strange to be on the other side of the road a bit freaky!!!!!!! It was good to see the suburbs the houses are all weather board and look like dolls hou.ses. Lots of lush green forest area and very tall cotton palms . We drove to Daytona Race Park about a one hour drive. Boy it was massive, holds 250,000.00 fans. We took a tour all around and on the track, followed by a 3D IMAX movie, they have the Dayton 500 in February so are starting to get ready now. We also went on a couple of simulator rides, it was lots of fun. They had some great displays and ... read more

We sat on the dock of Bert’s famous waterfront pub in Matlacha sipping Coronas while watching pelicans follow a crabber checking her traps. The sun was starting to dip when Wes said, “I could stay here forever.” I concur. A few mistakes and overlooked details got us to this remarkable spot on Matlacha (Mat La Shay), a small island connected by a draw bridge to Pine Island in the Charlotte Harbor area of the Gulf of Mexico. Our original destination was the wild barrier island of Cayo Costa via a boat from the Pine Island Marina. But, we didn’t have the requisite reservation and literally missed the boat. So we headed for the north of Pine Island to the little island of Bokeelia. We stopped in at Crossed Palms, a wonderful gallery with great views of ... read more

After picking up another large Mastercard receipt courtesy of Days Inn Hotels Inc, I pointed the Jeep further North up the I-95 towards Daytona Beach. Biketoberfest is held once a year in, you guessed it, October. It attracts more than 100,000 bikers from all over the world, many who see it as the last chance to jump on their hog before the winter. Daytona Beach has loads of motels and hotels who the week before would charge 40 bucks a night, but push the price up to 140 bucks a night for Biketoberfest. With most operating a 3 night minimum stay I just couldn't justify the expense. I decided I would stay for 1 night, the Wednesday before it all officially kicked off. When I arruved Daytona was already packed with bikers; fat bikers, thin bikers, ... read more

Several weeks ago we made a motorcycle trip (200 miles back and forth) from Inverness, a small town on the Nature Cost of Florida, to Daytona Beach to join the Bike-week. Inverness in the past a quiet, laid-back community. Now a days, lively and growing rapidly; new infrastructure everywhere. Villa-parks (almost 1000 new houses per year), Walmart’s after every 10-20 miles, Banks after every 2 miles. Inverness in Citrus County is becoming a big town and area for retired people, lawnmower men, builders and truck-dealers and other people who seek work or a good living. The weather unchained... fantastic. For us, 3 guys from Europe, yes... retired, owners of a second home and kawasaki lovers, an interesting but somewhat stressful adventure, because it was the first ever trip (after 30 years) that our wives joined us. ... read more
