You may have noticed that I look a little different. Then again, maybe you've never seen me before in your life, as you've just stumbled upon this blog and wondered who the drop-dead gorgeous woman writing it was.
Well, it's like this. I've had long hair for the last 20 years or so (ever since I grew out that horrendous 80s bowl cut in the 5th grade), and I just plain don't like change - with the notable exception of hair
color, where I've done everything from bleached-blond to stark black (both the results of home hair-dyeing gone awry, I should add).
However, there were some practical considerations directly relating to this trip to SE Asia. As far as color goes, I figured that, at 5'9" and freckled, I would stand out like a sore thumb anyway, so why not be a blond and have more fun?
1.
I don't want to have to haul around the Sam's Club size bottles of shampoo and conditioner. If you have long hair, you'll understand. I go through hair products almost as quickly as I go through Blue Bell ice cream, and as you will have noted in
Packing Like a Girl, space is
at a premium.
2.
I need to be able to keep cool. This means less hair, but still at a length where I can put it up in a pony-tail or smunch it under a hat (yes, "smunch" is a real word as of - right now).
3.
I want to look good. "But why?" you ask. "Aren't you pretty much traipsing around in the same three outfits for five months in places where curling irons are scarce? Will it really matter?" I would be tempted to say "yes," but I remember getting back from a trip to Istanbul. I had packed so light that there was not even any make-up in my bag, and I spent the entire trip with my hair back in a clip. When I got home to look at my pictures, I was appalled to see that there were none of
me; just lots of head-shots (you have to realize that when you're taking your own pictures, you are going to get a lot of close-ups) of this really bland-looking woman with hair and features similar to my own. Thus, I wanted a hairstyle that looks cute even when I don't have a
bathroom full of salon products handy. And who wants to show their boyfriend pictures of them looking like
that.
So I looked around and decided that, hey - Gwyneth Paltrow looks pretty good. So does Jennifer Lopez. They are both sporting a "Lob" haircut: essentially it is a bob, but longer.
Of course, I realize it is unfair to compare Gwyneth and Jennifer to me; but they
try, so I have to give them some credit.
I took my pictures to Cynthia at Maximum Image Hair Salon in Austin, and she was able to work miracles with my hair (it is extremely fine, you see).
And, so, voila - this is the new 'do.
