About a year ago, I bought a kindle. Then discovered kindleboards.com a forum for kindle owners. And "met" some great folks. Well, the kindle folks in the Washington DC area are the best at in person meetings. When they decided to do one in April, I decided to join. After all, what's a 3 hour train ride between friends? But then I realized that it had been over 10 years since my last trip to our nation's capital, so I decided to make a three day excursion of it. The restaurant where we were scheduled to meet was attached to the Phoenix Park Hotel, so I booked a room there. It was especially convenient since it was just 2 blocks from Union Station and relatively close to the Capitol and the National Mall. 8:10 train out ... read more

Last stop! I have come to the end of the trip and what a strange feeling. I have spent the best part of 7 months on the road and I have actually loved every minute of it. So, I have made the most of my last city vist here in Washington DC. I left New York on Monday morning (after sucessfully hailding down my first NYC yellow cab to get to the bus station) and then endured a 4 hour Greyhound journey (not as bad as I had built it up to be...) down to Washington DC. I managed to sleep a bit on the way which was good but then I was half asleep when I got off the bus which meant I managed to get into an unmarket taxi and only realise that it ... read more

Getting Ready To Travel Abroad I'm currently going through the process of finalizing all of the paperwork for my summer and fall abroad trips. It's amazing how much prep work needs to be done in order to be completely ready to go. There are a few items which I would recommend checking before going abroad, either for a college program, pleasure, or whatever your reason may be. 1. Find out if your insurance will cover you abroad: most insurance companies require that you pay upfront and later submit forms (be sure to keep your receipts!) for reimbursement. 2. Insure expensive items (this may be more or less necessary depending on the country which you are traveling to, but it's always a good idea) Cameras Camcorders Laptops Electronic Dictionaries Cell Phone etc. 3. Make sure to pack ... read more

Michele Mohr, Roberto Fars (both physicians in my group), and I all took a 2 1/2 hour tour of the D.C. area. The monuments and landmarks were impressive, especially this time of year. The Cherry blossom festival is taking place this Sunday, and the history is facinating. The Cherry Blossom trees were aparently a give from Japan, with over 3,000 trees planted. Now, there are over 4,000 trees. The Jefferson Memorial, when constructed, required the removal of about 80 trees, and the tour guide told us that several women from a local society tied themselves to the trees in an effort to save them. The contractor for the Jefferson Memorial gave the women tea cup after tea cup and eventually the women had to get up from the trees, and then the dozers leveled them! I ... read more

I arrived in D.C. after a long day of flights, connecting in Memphis and completing the flight path to D. C. around 5:30 PM. After checking in, I met with my friends and co-hospitalists, Michele and Roberto, for a wonderful meal overlooking the National Harbor. The meal lasted close to three hours! Roberto spoke a bit of Italian and we talked family and some "shop talk" as well. Will post some pictures of the area soon.... read more

After visiting several capitals of European nations, we finally see our own... ...For this "tour", we haven't hired guides to tell us about the history behind the monuments, (although we will next time!) there is no need to translate the local language, and there is no need to wonder about the food offered on the menus. This time, we know the history of the people and events that shaped this nation's heritage. We are finally touring our own country's capital city, Washington D.C. Here we are joined by good friends, and it is peak weekend for the famous Cherry blossoms! We booked seats on the train, and had a very relaxing trip into Union Station. From there, a walk to our hotel, and we are sight seeing once again! Our long winter has been very cold, ... read more

Greetings from the Dunns! We are on our second leg of the trip! Yesterday morning, we woke up early, said goodbye to the Big Apple and drove to Hoboken, NJ. We were determined to eat pasteries at Carlos' Bakery. This time - sweet success!! There was no line and we walked right in. I was hoping to see Buddy, but they said that he wasn't due in for a few more hours. The bakery is much smaller than I had envisioned, but the ladies behind the counter were very nice - even though they were barking at each other like they do on the show. There was a group of old men who were sitting at the only table. You could tell that they were regulars and weren't planning on moving any time soon! After ordering ... read more
