Today, I set off for our nation's capitol! I was by myself the whole day while Jerome did some other things. I took the metrorail from the house we were staying to a stop close to the capitol building. The capitol building, housing Congress, has a nice new visitor's center which I stopped at first. From there I stood in line and got a tour of the building. The guide was very knowledgable and took us to the rotunda, old House meeting room, and a few other rooms. The rotunda area was very beautiful, with several paintings all around that tell of our nation's history. The old House meeting room had several statues from the different states, including Sam Houston, and plaques that marked the desk locatons of famous representatives, including Abraham Lincoln. After the tour, ... read more

Today I spent the entire day at the Smithsonian Museums. The museums opened at 10:00 a.m. and I was ready and there by that time! First I traveled to see the National Air and Space Museum. There, I saw many airplanes hanging from the ceiling and several exhibits about the history of plane and space travel. There was even one of the planes by the Wright brothers there. There was also a model of a space vessel that you could walk inside of. Next I went to the Natural History Museum. There were several exhibits and fossils, as well as a wealth of information about life science and geology. There I saw the Hope Diamond. Next was the American History Museum. This was where I spent most of my time. There were many exhibits, ranging from ... read more

Hi, This morning after leaving West Virginia, we got into Virginia (of course). We drove and about two pm we pulled over in Staunton, Va. and took a nap at the local Walmart, now you know why the blog isn’t getting done, we are so exhausted by the time we check into our hotel room at night. Later, about 4:30 pm, we finally got into Washington D.C. and one of the first things we saw, that we recognized was the Pentagon! We checked into our hotel in Arlington, VA. We have a view from our room on the ninth floor of the Pentagon, the Washington, D.C. mall & Arlington National Cemetery. We unloaded the car, went down and paid for a night tour of the D.C. monuments. So we saw/conquered the memorials all the way until ... read more

Hi, The Hotel is awesome; we got up early and took a taxi to the Holocaust Museum. Pam & Julia stayed in line and Heidi & Rylan walked over to the Washington Monument and stood in line and got tickets to go up around 12:30pm then walked back to the Holocaust Museum where the others were. At 10am we went into the Museum and learned tons, Julia said “Grandma my heart is heavy.” Which completely describes how we all felt; it was very sad what had happened. We then went to the Washington Memorial, took pictures and got in another line. In Washington D.C., every building anyone pretty much goes into has security and a security checkpoint that you get scanned and so does your stuff. The guards get pretty grouchy if you do anything wrong, ... read more

My vacation has officially started, but I haven't left the country yet, so it doesn't feel like it. :) I spent two days in D.C. before Rachel and I left for Costa Rica. It was very helpful for me, though, because I realized I forgot my camera cables & was able to go to Best Buy and get a memory card reader for cheap. Also had a chance to eat at Chipotle's - yummy. I know we have them in Seattle, but Rachel is the one who introduced me to the chain when we both lived out here so it was quite nostalgic. The funniest (read: stupidest - and don't get on me about the grammar, either!) thing that happened was using Google Maps to help me navigate the Metro. It worked for me in Chicago ... read more

May 10. Curiously for the capital of the world's superpower, Washington, DC feels neighborly. Sure, there's the White House, the Capitol Building, and a plethora of federal buildings. But get past the Mall and you'll find cozy neighborhoods that defy the pomp and prestige everyone has come to associate of the district (at least everyone outside the US). We got here after a six-hour drive from Philly, stopping briefly in Delaware to stock up on food items. We stayed in an inn (more like a motel) an hour walk from the Amtrak station. Stops include the Amtrak station, a couple of Smithsonian Museums, the Washington Monument, and the Arlington Cemetery across the Potomac River in Virginia.... read more

This is my very first entry period. I am very excited to start my traveling and to share my other life goals. I am on a semi-bucketlist mission and I know it might seem weird that I'm thinking about death already but it helps to know that I have things to do that will be a major impact to me. So without a further a do, here is the start of it ALL.... read more

I decided to make a blog so whoever wants to hear my updates from Asia can read all about them! It's officially two weeks from tomorrow until I leave the country for a little over 3 months!! Craziness!!!!! I just found out I am going to be spending 6 weeks in Hanoi, Vietnam working the the University of Hanoi Law School doing some developmental work for legal clinics under a UNDP project. That is going to be amazing because I LOVE Vietnam. I have never been to the Northern region (ahh the communist stronghold!) but it should be great and very hot. Only a two hour trip to the beach which is another plus of working in Hanoi! My first choice was working in Cambodia this summer, but Hanoi isn't such a shabby second choice. Anyways, ... read more

Thursday was the actual kindle meet and my "take it easy" day. My body was not happy with me from the exertions of the day before (six miles while carrying my overpacked backpack) on top of the 3 mile MS walk on Sunday. So I slept in late and then went down to meet folks. Ann was already there when I got down but I was wearing a short sleeved shirt and so went back up to my room to get my coverup and by the time I got back, Heather and her daughter Ashley had arrived. Susan was next, and interestingly enough, it was the menfolk (Geoff and Mike) who kept us waiting. But all is forgiven, 'cause Mike brought me copies of 3 of his books in trade paperback. While I was really glad ... read more
