Finally back to Washington DC! it took me some time. My first visit was back 9 years ago with Leslie. We stay only 2 days and I kept a great souvenir of that short stay.
This time it's adult time....and we have legs to walk longer...further! We are staying next to the Pentagon. It was actually fun to drive next to the car park of the huge building to reach our hotel. Our little nest will be the Westin Crystal city. Nice decent room...and walking distance to a Whole Foods supermarket...perfect place to pick up nice food for dinner time.
This time, we have many more museums on the program. Hotels in Washington DC can be pretty cheap in summer....but museums, are free of charge. Going around is also easy by metro, so put it simple, Washington DC is a dream for any budget, but specially for those on a tight one!
We did a total of two full days, and there are still places we haven't seen...so we'll be back for sure to visit the National Museum of African American History. Sad to say we couldn't visit that one plus few
others. With Leslie, I did the National Museum of Natural History as well as the Air & Space museum. This time, it's a lot better program.
We started with the National Gallery of Art. You could spend a full day easily here, we just spend a full morning. I have to admit, this place is as good as famous landmark such as the Metropolitan in New York or the Art Institute of Chicago. We will do both of them in the coming days. I believe this is also the last major art museum that was missing to my collection of top rated art museums. It didn't disappoint, the place is simply sublime. This is a place we will visit again!
Next, we crossed the Mall to the National Museum of American Indian. Straight on I know we are going to have to beat the clock. Most museum here close pretty early...and our legs are already suffering too! But it is a place not to miss. specially as we have driven the last few days from places to places of National importance for the Native Americans. This is like joining the pieces of a big
puzzle!
Next morning, a very fun first experience, we are visiting the Congress. This is also a free visit and a pretty entertaining one. They have thousands of visitors and the show is run pretty smoothly. We had the chance to view the room of the Senate. No pictures allowed inside, but what a place. Time also to learn a lot on the way the Congress run the elections for the House of Representatives as well as the Senate. This is a truly worthy visit....and don't forget to spend some time at the Library too.
Next, we moved to Georgetown town for some more sightseeing, and to buy some pisco. We have amazing produces back at home...but we don't find everthing...so yes we did stock on few niceties during our small trip.
Equipped with our bottles of pisco, and yes you can smile...we continued to visit the different memorials. We spent time by the Vietnam War, the Korean War, Martin Luther King and the Lincoln Memorial.
Our last visit of the day was for the holocaust museum. We couldn't visit the full museum as they had already got
their maximum number of visitors for the day. Not a huge fan of the way the exhibition is presented. The bias here is pretty simple...put the blame on the local populations for not stepping in to defend those who were going to be murdered. I understand and agree on that point of view, but than, why nowhere is it posted in the Museum that the United States turn around boats of Jewish refugees who would at the end of the day be murdered in the extermination camps....because the United States wouldn't take new refugees. Even in the States, people do try to re-write history in a manner that suit them...the current political hypocrisies haven't changed, even today! I believe many of the new American generations would do well by looking a little closer at the new generations of Germans. They may learn few things!
This was it. We tremendously enjoyed Washington DC...we will have to come back as there are still more interesting places to visit. Next, we are heading East....yes, it's possible!
