I cannot express how much I have missed the beach. I also, cannot express how much I miss the complete lack of traffic in Columbia, MO. Traffic sucks. But the beach makes it all worthwile. We drove to the "Duck House," my parents beach house this weekend and had so much fun. Friday we had crab cakes and beers and wine and stayed up late talking and playing cards and listening to the sound of the water. I wish I could live on the porch listening to the sounds of the water lapping up on the shore. Saturday was a perfect beach day and alas, it was not crowded!!! YAY!!!!! We spent almost 7 hours sitting on the beach. We people watched, went for long walks and swam in the Atlantic. I LOVE the beach. Saturday ... read more

so i packed 99.9% of my pack, the only things left out are the essentials - passport, ticket to zambia (which i won't need until sept 5, how many bets on me losing it before then?), camera and a few toiletries so i don't look too special coming off the plane in dublin. and the best part - my pack weighs in at 23.5 lbs. so i am cheating a bit - i don't have full water bottles yet and of course no food (i've heard that it's not too hard to come by in europe) but i'm pysched that even with my tent and sleeping bag, it's still less than 25 lbs. hard to imagine that i'll be living out of that for the next 8 months or so. good thing i don't have super-high ... read more

Well, today I headed off to Wilmington, Delaware, for a presentation to our newest firm. We picked a heck of a day to do it too - the coldest day of the year. Yes, here in lovely Jersey it was a balmy nine degrees when I woke up this morning...without the wind chill. So I thought to put on a lined suit, and wear a sweater over my blouse and OF COURSE I wore a warm coat, gloves, and scarf. But I still was unprepared for the bitter bitter cold. At any rate, it took us about two and a half hours to get into Wilmington, which is not a bad drive all in all, and a dream trip in the car when you've spent as much time in planes as I have recently! The little ... read more

The last weekend of January, Adam surprised me with a weekend getaway to the quite resort town of Bethany Beach, Delaware. Bethany Beach is one of the three coastal towns along Delaware’s Atlantic coastline. The beach in this part of Delaware has beautiful white sand that stretches for miles. It makes for a worthwhile retreat from the dreary District in the dead of winter. At the recommendation of Quick Escapes Washington, D.C. (Fitzpatrick, John and Holly J. Burkhalter. Guilford, Connecticut: Globe Pequot Press, 2005.), we stayed at the ridiculously charming Addy Sea Bed and Breakfast. The Addy Sea is fantastic. It is approximately 100 years old with thirteen uniquely designed rooms located directly on the beach. Adam and I were in a quaint third floor corner room with a skylight. It was very romantic. Whereas it ... read more

Spent most of today driving from Harvard, Massachusetts to Harrington, Delaware. Went through Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. I followed the mapping program the entire way. I checked it to see that it was generally sending me to the correct area and it was at first glance. I didn’t realize it was sending me through downtown New York City. It was pretty heroining. The computer would bark out commands and I would watch for the signs, while having traffic all around me. We crossed the bridge into Jersey and things were much improved. It was neat through New York how much effort they put into saving their trees. They essentially built the roads around the trees. Very pretty. I don’t think Illinois would put that kind of effort into saving trees. They had ... read more

I was settling into life in New Plymouth. I was working at the motel, I had just started a new job at Lonestar (not the same chain as in the US) waiting tables, surfing heaps and just found a place to do jiu jitsu. About 3 weeks ago I got an email from my sister informing me that my dad had been diagnosed with lung cancer and had spread to his stomach. The doctor has given him less than a year to live. I did the only thing I could think of which was to buy a plane ticket and get home as fast as I could. I quit my jobs, closed my bank account, sold my van and came home. After being on 3 different planes for a combined travel time of over 20 hours, ... read more

So it's been a long time since I've been to the Atlantic Ocean and actually Delaware is the furthest east I have ever been!! I flew out and met up with Dan and his family and stayed with them for five days in their beach house. This trip was full of "new experiences." That was the main theme because almost everything we did and everything I ate was new to me! It was great!! The first night we ate some amazing Italian subs and then went to the boardwalk. The boardwalk has all sorts of shops and is right on the beach and is just a fun place to be at night! It was there where i was introduced to Thrashers Fries. The most amazing fries ever!! They have apple cider vinegar on them and are ... read more
