The Captain was spot on and I enjoyed every rock and roll of the seas. Today is our last port, Little Salvadore Island in the Bahamas, known to HAL cruisers as Half Moon Cay. The winds are still strong so I miss coffee on the verandah. Couldn’t get the door open. Those are strong winds. No more breakfasts in bed for a while. Some of the excursions ashore have been cancelled including everything involving the stingrays. They must enjoy calm waters. I decide to read for a while, enjoy a light lunch, check in for my flight and start thinking about packing up. I am anxious to see Joe and Casper but I sure will miss the warm sunshine and the nice people I’ve met along the way. Tonight I met a couple from LI who ... read more

It rained for 1 hour between 8-9 am, which was truly amazing because that is exactly what the weather report called for. It was right for once. I had planned on stopping to visit my niece Tanya and the kids, but plans changed. I really like the back roads route I had planned through RI and into CT so I decided to take the roads less traveled. I traveled Route 44, Route 6 and Route 66. It was awesome looking at farmlands and ponds and nature! Beats the highways anytime. I drove through the little town of Pomfret Center, which is quite quaint. For a time I worked in Portland, CT and liven the next town of Middletown, CT. I stopped to do a hike at the Wadsworth Falls State Park. It was a great hike ... read more

Musings and observations. The weather these last 24 days has been amazing. When I left CT it was sunny but with a fresh chilly breeze. That continued from Rome to Athens which didn’t encourage sunning by the pool but was perfect weather for touring. Some mornings were a bit overcast but before long the sun was shining bright. I enjoyed a full moon, some brilliant sunsets and cloudless star filled nights. On the day we sailed into Venice there was a slight drizzle. As we passed the crowds at ST. Mark’s and the Rialto Bridge I decided to stay on board and nurse my lingering cold. Late May seems like the peak season in the Med even through I know it gets worse in summer. Crowds everywhere. Standing room only on the water busses and when ... read more

Not sure I could travel independently in Greece. Signage is mostly in Greek and very difficult to understand. Whoever coined the phrase "It's all Greek to me" was on the money. There are five symbols for "I", four for "O" and plus all the other symbols of the Greek alphabet. Most everyone in the tourist industry speaks English but not everyone is in tourism. Greek men always seen to be speaking loudly even when conversing on a plane. Not sure if it's cultural or a sign of economic stress. Many buildings have been abandoned half done and the unemployment rate for men between 16 and 40 is 60%, or so I was told. That can't be sustained without civil unrest. Our tour in Santorini was changed because strikes and demonstrations were happening on one side of ... read more

Some final thoughts on our trip. While the scenery might have been better in the sun, still the drizzle and mists are what I think of when I think of Scotland. Since it was lambing season, we say lots of black faced babies gamboling in the meadow, the ewes grazing or both just taking a little lie down. We say highland cattle, horses with blankets on and some without, gulls and oyster catchers and ring-necked pheasant and a group of bunnies nibbling the grass. All the hotels were fine except for the one at Oban. Although Mike tried to lower our expectations, still even he was distressed at how far down it had gone. It is a old hotel on the historic registry which means that repairs and upgrades have to be approved and that is ... read more

Into the warm --- Random thoughts on get away day. Traffic at 8:45 on Rt 95 was sparse, more like a Saturday than a Wednesday. That can be attributed to the President’s Day vacation period in part but it really felt spooky to pass my Stamford exit at 55 mph or more. For some unknown and silly reason Delta has renamed the area in the concourse where the gates are located as the “Gatehouse”. “ If Ms Smith is in the gatehouse, please go to the podium at gate 7” The flight attendants were not happy campers. The plane was small, an MD88, with limited overhead space and it was a full flight. It’s fun to watch folks cram their coats in the overhead just after the flight attendants asked them to wait until the luggage ... read more
