On the way to my brothers house he explained this great idea on how to "surprise" our mother for Thanksgiving. The idea came from his friend Noah. Noah told him... what you do, is you bring your mom into the house and sit her on the couch. Then offer her a drink. Go into the kitchen to get a drink. And instead of you bringing her out her drink have your brother.
Laughing we both agreed this would be a great scenario unless she asked for a glass of red wine because the chances of her spilling it were 50/50 because of the SURPRISE! Instead we came up with this plan to have me go to the grocery store pick up a bouquet of flowers. Upon my return he would have her answer the door and I'd be standing there with flowers. We thought and thought of ideas until our older brother called letting us know mom had left Grand Junction around 9:30am and wouldn't be there until nearly 1:30pm depending on traffic. Happy we had plenty of time we continued discussing options. Just before I was to get cleaned up and go to the store all of our ideas were squashed with one phone call.
"JC," Andy said, "Have you seen Aaron?" "What's up kid?" "That was mom on the phone, she's on Wadsworth. She'll be here in fifteen minutes!" "What? It's not even Noon, yet?" "Go figure. Better hurry up."
Instead of a leisurely shower, I bounced in and out grabbing thoughts of what to do since we had no time left. Exiting the house, I decided to flee the scene go down the street. Then Andy's neighbor Kevin said, "just grab a man-juice and hide in my garage." "Great thought. Not sure about the barley pop, though." "Well... what are you going to do?" Andy asked. Standing around her vehicle came up the street. Not thinking I went back into the house to hide. As I hid behind the door leading downstairs the overwhelming smell of bacon cooking in the kitchen forced me out of my hiding spot just after JC said, "mom, I'm going to go play downstairs." Upon opening the door he saw me, laughed and shut the door. Escaping the bacon smelling downstairs hiding spot, I decided to grab two beers out of the fridge.
Walking to the front door, moms' suitcase sat next to the front door. Smiling I opened the door stepping out, hoping she was talking to Andy and not looking at the door. Moving to the first step, she stood inches away fumbling with her coat and purse. "Hey Andy. Which one of these beers did you say you needed for the turkey?" I asked.
Andy and Kevin smiling stood in anticipation as my mom, looked at my shoes and began moving her head up towards my face. At first she looked me in the face then recognition struck, "AARON!!!!" and a burst of instant tears. Choked up, I threw my arms around my mother, who I hadn't seen since July 2009. Looking over her shoulder, Kevin said, "aggh man... this is too much for me even I got tears." Laughing we all began to idly chat about my mom asking, "What are you doing here? Aren't you suppose to be in Vancouver?" "Correct. I was suppose to be there. But I'm not. I'm here. Are you Surprised?" That's when she gave me another hug.
Just to be clear... this is the 2nd time since 2005 that I've surprised my mom for Thanksgiving. It's a tradition that I've personally made and plan to keep on giving when I can.
