Nearby to Mexican Hat is Goosenecks State Park, which overlooks part of the San Juan river. From here, the depths to the river below reach over 1000 feet as the river snakes sharply back and forth - giving the place its name. Or perhaps it was discovered by John Goosenecks. I forget. Amazing maths skills
So I know you've been a man of leisure of late, but there is no need to forget your basic maths skills. You were 150m above our highest mountain, not 50. That's like almost half of the Eiffel Tower!
