Day 16 - We had a massive storm overnight, plenty of thunder & lighting, heavy rain around 2-3am. Still heavy overcast skies this morning and light drizzle, we headed out to Sturgis for breakfast and a walk around town before the 78th Sturgis Rally gets underway in approximately a months time. All the shops are up and running with all leather biker gear & t shirts stocked to the hilt. As we were due to leave it started to bucket down again, so we headed back to Deadwood to stay out of the rain. Another stroll in Historic Main Street, and the skies started to clear. We decided to head out to Bear Country, 10 miles the other side of Rapid City. It looked pretty dark and bleak as we rode the Interstate to Rapid City. ... read more

Geo: 40.3927, -105.074You faithful readers of our traveling blogs (you know who you are) know that almost all of our trips start with our good friend Tom Delaney taking us to the airport, and this trip is no exception. But this time there is a big difference, when we got to DIA ((Denver International Airport), Tom parked the car, grabbed his suitcases and joined us!About six weeks ago when the three of us were out to dinner together Tom was telling us about an Icelandic author he was enjoying reading. "I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights," I sighed. "Wanna go to Iceland?" "Yes!" said Jeff. "YES!" said Tom. And there is the start of this adventure.Naturally, being frugal travelers, we did some Internet researching and found a great deal on Travelzoo...airfare from Denver and ... read more

Geo: 40.3927, -105.074Back at home, it is f-ing cold, and the only birds I hear are the Canadian geese in the backyard.Reading back over my blog, I realized there were a couple of things I neglected to mention that I thought you might enjoy. For example, on the 14th, the evening we spent hanging out with Annie and Norman, Annie asked if we felt the quakes? WHAT???? Turns out there were 3 minor earthquakes in this area today and we didn't even notice! She felt one but not the other two. Boy, I feel gyped.Very early in our vacation, I think it was the first full day we were here and went to the farmer's market, I realized when we got home that I'd lost my driver's license. Dang! Not only is that going to be ... read more

Geo: 40.4161, -105.052Tomorrow we leave on our first ever sailing vacation...and we've been packing, unpacking, and packing again trying to stuff everything we need for a 10 day trip (6 days on a 35 foot sloop) into one carry-on sized duffel bag and a backpack. We've always been good at packing light but this is a bit of a challenge as our destination, Victoria, British Columbia, coupled with sailing winds means we need to take jackets, sweaters and other bulky stuff. But we did it! All that remains is getting our the electronics into the bag...and snacks, gotta have snacks.Pokey and Gumby are ready!... read more

Geo: 40.3927, -105.0744 a.m came much too early this morning, but up we were. Last minute chores: feed the cat, take out the trash, turn off the water heater, make coffee -> not necessarily in that order. The doorbell at 4:50 told us that Tom had arrived. It takes a very good friend to offer to drive you to the airport at dark:thirty in the morning. Thanks, Tom!Our flight to Phoenix left Denver International Airport on time, wonder of wonders, and was just long enough for me to start and finish Lois Lowery's novel "The Giver." The time between our arrival in Phoenix and our connecting flight to Maui passed very quickly. We had time for a bathroom stop, to purchase a salad to eat later and we were boarding. Here is a picture of Miles. He is ... read more

After a brief stop at Georgetown, we headed west on I-70. My longing for exhilarating driving was answered by the Loveland Pass highway sign. Anything with the word “Pass” in this mountain region means driving ecstasy. Without a GPS, I took the exit ramp. I didn’t care where this US-6 West would lead me. All I knew, I was about to experience the mountain road that would wake up all my senses. Route US-6 is a wide nicely paved ascending two-lane undivided highway with ample emergency lanes on both sides. The highest point at the pass is 11990 ft. I mesmerized the picturesque view of the mountains and valleys before me. The vista point at the Loveland pass offers the breathtaking grandiose view. No matter which direction I looked, I saw hundreds of mountains and they ... read more

Geo: 40.3927, -105.074This it Turkey minus 7 days! A week from right now I'll be at Denver International Airport. The requisite 3 hours before my international flight.Let's see, am I organized? Pretty much, though I still need to print my postcard address labels. It is much lighter to carry a sheet of pre-printed address labels than my entire address book. Need to make my money cheat sheet - a 3x5 or 4x6 card with one side showing Dollars to Turkish Lira to Euros in a variety of amounts and in that order, the other side going from Lira to Dollars to Euros. A handy on the fly currency conversion.Tomorrow I will pack (yes, seriously) and then spend the rest of the week trying not to put anything else into my bag! And ironing is on the ... read more

August 24, 2013 Saturday Woke up to a beautiful morning, with the Rockies all around. Took a long walk after breakfast and all around the lake. We’re starting to see Canada Geese heading South, in their Vee formation. Their honking and flying low are fun to see and hear. On one part of the walk, with the Rockies in the distance, we felt like we were walking right into a postcard. A trip to Red Lobster today for Will’s belated Father’s Day dinner and the All you can Eat Shrimp. And he did eat some shrimp! 100 of them. Marge had the Rainbow Trout, her favorit,e and we both rolled out of there. Went to a few of the stores along the strip and then back to the campground for an evening of sitting out and ... read more

August 23, 2013 - Friday A lovely drive to Fort Collins, Colorado today. We left at 9:00 and it was 58 degrees. Rawlins, Wyoming was a large Railroad town with trains running allll night long. Eight times at last count. Not a lot of sleep. We’re seeing a large oil refinery along the drive and lots of windmills. We cross the N. Platte River and the Rocky Mtns are in the distance to the South. We will drive by two famous Wild West towns: Laramie and Cheyenne.; we also drive through Medicine Bow National Forest and cross the same river. Miles and miles of snow fencing. At 8,000 feet, we’re now in the High Plains. We stop at a rest area and it’s got an Abraham Lincoln Monument, honoring his Sesquitennial birth date. The monument is ... read more
