3 train cars put together to form one great cafe.
We had a much easier day today than most of our other days so far, and it's been really nice. We're still here in Golden, CO and being able to spend the day sightseeing in the area without the luggage on the motorcycles has been really nice.

We got on the road around 10:00am this morning, so we were able to sleep in a bit and plan out our route at breakfast. We left and headed into the mountains to the northwest of Golden. Similar to many of the other days we've had, the roads were great and the views were spectacular, particularly as the elevation climbed and we saw the snow-capped mountains. Our first stop was for coffee in Nederland, CO. We passed by Buffalo Bill's Coffee and Confections, and decided to stop because it was a cafe built with 3 old train cars. It was really neat to see the way they put together an old caboose, a 1906 Pullman car, and an 1872 postal car that was previously used in Buffalo Bill's Traveling Circus. Of course, even though the setting was great, the coffee and homemade donuts were amazing too. The furniture inside the cafe also came

from Caribou Ranch which is in Nederland, and this is a destination recording studio where Elton John, Michael Jackson and John Lennon have recorded before. On our way out, we met 2 motorcyclists with the Christian Motorcyclists Association, and they chatted with us for a few minutes and had us join a prayer circle with them for a safe journey.

We left Nederland and headed up to Estes Park where we got gas before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park. As soon as we got into the park we had 4 deer cross the road in front of us, so we finally saw some wildlife inside one of the parks. A few miles in, we also saw some elk just off the road lying down near a stream. They were actually comfortable with people getting very close to them, so we got some great photos of these 3 elk. We continued on through the park, and the elevation climbed while the temperature dropped. We ultimately reached a high point of over 12,100 feet, and the temperature dropped to 36 degrees again. We stopped at the Alpine Visitor Center which is just a few hundred feet lower than this, and

It was cold, and we needed those huge cups of coffee and warm donuts.
warmed up a bit while we watched some more elk grazing in the valley.

There was a lot of snow in the mountains, and the road through the park just opened on Saturday for the season now that the snow has been cleared. It was a nerve-wracking ride at times because there were still some winds lingering at this elevation, along with high elevation, cold temperatures, and severe drops off the side of the road without guardrails. But we made it up and back down with a lot of great photos, and having seen wildlife.

We left the park and headed down to Boulder, CO for dinner. We had hoped to go to Jimmy & Drew's Deli for rueben sandwiches that they make on 2 potato pancakes, but unfortunately they were closed since it's Memorial Day, so we turned to another Diner, Drive In and Dive recommendation and ate at Foolish Craig's Cafe. Since we couldn't have potato pancake ruebens at Jimmy & Drew's, we started with the butternut squash latkes that they had on the menu, which were really good. Dad had a bleu cheese, bacon and cucumber burger, and I had their chicken duxelle crepe which

We got them with the works; Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar and chocolate sprinkles.
has chicken and mushrooms in tomato cream sauce wrapped in a crepe. The food was great, and we got back to the hotel earlier tham many of the recent evenings we've had. We got laundry done for the last time this trip, and made hotel reservations for the remainder of the trip as we head for Salt Lake City, so we won't have to worry about that for the remainder of the trip.

Now it's time to take it easy, relax for a bit, and look forward to the last few days of riding ahead of us.
