Trip West 2007 #6 Colorado North America » United States » Colorado » Rocky Mountains » Estes Park By Chuck PattyJuly 5th 2007Chuck & Patty Ostner June 5, 2007 - We’re spending the night in Tallahassee after spending the 4th in Alabama. Have to finish this up by including some pictures of the 4 days we were in Rocky Mtn. NP. We figured that we’ve been in 20 states, 4 time zones, traveled about 10,000 miles and we’re definitely a little poorer fr... read more

Happy Birthday Leigh!! Well since today is my last day with Heather we decided to have an awesomely girly day. We were planning on going horseback riding in the morning and then possibly climbing in the afternoon, but we got a bit of a late start. It was also WAY too hot to be doing any strenuous approaches for climbing. Instead we decided to check out the Scandinavian Festival in town with Robbie before we had to get to our 1pm horse ride and she had to get to work. The Festival took up this big park in the middle of downtown and they sold all sorts of stuff like pastries, wool clothing and tons of jewelry. After that we wandered around downtown a bit and stopped for lunch at a tourist-y little place that ... read more

Today Dillon drove into Estes and we met Heather for lunch at the sushi place close to her work. Then Dillon and I hiked up the Gem Lake trail, the views were beautiful but the lake was disappointing and mosquito-y. The hike was tons of fun though because Dillon and I had four years of catching up to do, and we sang our school songs on the walk down. I do love hanging out with fellow band nerds! After the hike Dillon headed back to Boulder so I went to the river behind Heather's shop and stuck my feet in to cool off....then made some phone calls to make people jealous ;) When Heather got off work we went for a quick climb near Mary's Lake. Heather learned to set up anchors and I just ... read more

Today I went up to the Wild Basin area where Robbi and her parents are staying for the summer. Her dad is retired but he is a seasonal park employee and works with the water in the national parks. The whole family is spending the summer in a cabin inside the park. It is absolutely amazing at their place, all you have to do is walk out the front door and you're ready to hike around the park. We were going to try to get to Calypso Cascades before Robbi had to go to work but we didn't quite make it there. Apparently we were so excited to get moving that we did a rather poor job of reading the signs. Instead of taking the path to Copeland falls that would lead to ... read more

Well today was a pretty relaxing day all things considered. I was feeling pretty sore from the climbing yesterday so I decided to just let myself sleep in until my legs and arms were ready to face the world again. Heather had to work most of the day but she left me her bike so that I could get into town. Except it got left locked inside the garage :( So I just decided to walk into town and meet Heather on her lunch break. It took me less than an hour and it was a pretty easy 2.5 mile walk downhill. I took some nice pictures and got to see all the crazy critters that like to run across your path when you're walking!! At least they're cute! Heather took me for lunch at ... read more

UntitledRegis Phew... today was ROUGH! Went for my second ever outdoor climb, and it was amazing but I had a hell of a time making the trek up to the climbing spot. We climbed the White Whale today which has three pitches (separate climbs). I've never done a multi-pitch climb before and I was really worried that I couldn't make it but there ended up being enough of a break between climbs that I was fine. In other good news I managed not to injure myself! There were four of us climbing, Jay, Heather, Robbi and me. Jay did the lead climbing up to the belay stations towing my rope (teal) and Heather's rope (pink). Once he got to the belay station and had us hooked in Heather started climbing and I followed her up towing ... read more

Colorado Day 2Regis You all may be shocked to know that I woke up at 7:30 this morning to go climbing (ok... it's 8:30 home time, but still impressive). We went into Heather's shop to pick up my gear and I managed to walk away with a Black Diamond Harness, La Sportiva Shoes (from Italy!), and a new orange Nalgene for only $100! I 3 Heather!! We met Heather's friend and coworker Mesa at the shop and headed over to Jurassic Park (yup, that's seriously the name of the place) we climbed the Index Toe Route on the Dinosaur's Foot. The climb was near Lily Lake. Since I'm such a newbie I decided to wear my flip flops figuring I'd just change into my new shoes when it was time to climb... big mistake! In Illinois ... read more

Colorado Day 1Regis So I did manage to finish packing and get an hour of sleep before leaving at 4:45 to get to the Chambana airport. That is by far the smallest airport I've ever been in, I think there were only 5 gates! Speaking of small, the airplane itself was also tiny, but it did have fancy leather seats. I was really hoping to see the University as we flew over, but there was an insane amount of fog so I couldn't actually see anything once we got up. The plane also went way faster than any of the larger ones I've been on (probably because it's smaller). The flight to Dallas was pretty uneventful (mostly because I fell asleep as soon as I got my cranberry juice). Then I hung around in the Dallas/Ft. ... read more

I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. Sunday (24 JUNE 07) found us up bright and early the goal wasto get to Dieters Donut House before all the good donuts were gone. Dieters was another tradition of K & J they get donuts then either go to the city park or the national park and enjoy them. We were checked out of the hotel by 7:30 AM. By ... read more
