Estes park is again a beautiful spot in the world. We got to camp and settled in early like we like to do. The drive up was wonderful and again around every corner was a new wonderful sight. It was the same mountainous terrain but yet different. It was more close up visual rock with some colors and more trees than we had at 11 mile. It almost seems more plush. The first day here was kind of cold and crappy so we decided to go to town and get Kathy a haircut. There was not one salon that had anything open so we walked over to a barbershop where we found a 87 year old barber. He said no way was he touching Kathy's hair so she said Greg get your haircut so it gets ... read more

From Denver, we traveled to Estes Park for the wedding of our niece which took place at the Overlook Ranch beautifully situated on the outskirts. In the quaint town of Estes Park, there are lots of shops and eateries and even ghost tours at the Stanley Hotel where The Shining was filmed. On the last day in the area, we traveled the Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Our intention was to drive through the park after the weekend until we learned the road was closed annually to through traffic until Memorial Day and was only open to Rainbow Curve. With a change in plans now necessary, we drove as far as the closure point to enjoy whatever was available pre-season in the park.... read more

We took Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park up to the Alpine Visitor Center. This is a great dirt road winding one way up 9 miles with lots of switchbacks. Not for the faint of heart with no guardrails and some tight drops. Many years ago we had to go the wrong way (downhill) late at night when Trail Ridge Road was closed unexpectedly for road repairs. Going up is much nicer with time to look at the mountain scenery. We stopped along the way to see many small waterfalls and some wildlife including deer and pika. We topped the day off with a good round of miniature golf - a Kaiser favorite. Dean won, as always, and Mary Ann was a close second with 2 hole in ones and too many over ... read more

Beautiful sunny day in Rocky Mountain National Park today with temperatures in the low 70s in Estes Park and in the low 50s at 12,000 feet in RMNP. Did some short climbs up trails to sit on top of rocks and watched a lot of wildlife and amazing scenic mountain views. We saw more Elk on this journey than we have in the past. At night we went to the Senior Rodeo at the Estes Fairgrounds. Watched bronco and steer riding, all kinds of ropping, mutton busting (kids holding on for dear life aboard a sheep), and barrel racing. The horses and riders were amazing.... read more

We spent today walking around town through the shops. We also took 2 hours to do a horseback ride into Rocky Mountain National Park with Jackson Stables out of the YMCA in Estes Park. Amazing scenery, some trotting (which Mary Ann didn't expect), and lots of narrow trails up and down some very steep areas. Sean rode Renegade, Drew rode Redneck, Mary Ann rode Noodle, and Dean rode Uno. Noodle was most interested in getting fly swatted by Redneck's tail and eating and Uno wasn't really interested in riding unless he was told to. The ride was a lot of fun and took us to spots we normally wouldn't see in the park. When we got back to our hotel we were surprised to see the guests waiting for us in the parking lot and grazing ... read more

Our destination today was diverted from Grand Junction to Denver to drop off the damaged rental car. It's about a 6 hour drive so we had plenty of time to watch the scenery, movies, and work on summer school packets! Silverton is along the journey so we stopped in town to watch the train pull in and grab some good ice cream. Feeling better with a new vehicle that doesn't have wind blowing thru the plastic on the window. From Denver we headed to Estes Park just in time to check in to our hotel and call it a night.... read more

Geo: 40.3761, -105.524 We left Colorado Springs and headed to toward Estes Park. The road was pretty twisty, but fun. We arrived in Estes and checked into our hotel. It is a small hotel and looked kind of plain on the outside. But the room was great! Its large, clean and comfortable. We grabbed some lunch and headed for the arial tram. It goes up to the top of the nearest mountain, 8700 feet. The view is great. Its a beautiful, sunny day, about 85 degrees. We also could see the smoke cloud from the fire here in Colorado. Luckily, it is about 25 miles northeast of us. After that we headed over to the Stanley Hotel to take a tour. The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for Steven King's novel "The Shining". He stayed here ... read more

Geo: 40.3761, -105.524When I was first "planning" this trip back in March and April, I figured that I would spend some time on the front range of Colorado (Denver, Boulder, etc - where the plains meet the mountains), and then take about three months to go southwest, up thru the northwest and into Canada, down into Montana and Idaho, across the upper midwest to New England, down the eastern seaboard, tromp through the south, and possibly even make it all the way back to Reno in time for Burning Man. And here I was, Burning Man already just a memory, and I had not made it further east than Denver - my starting location. After a couple days in Reno to recoup, clean, sleep, and blog, I lit a fire under my ass to get moving eastward ... read more

Family Vacation for 2011 is just around the corner. This year all of us get to go! Well excluding the dogs and cats. All places should really be pet friendly. Well maybe not all the pets. The dogs would be a blast though. So this year we aren't venturing very far from home. Just a little drive up to Estes Park. But we did something new this year and rented a house. Which is working out rather well so far. With 3 bedrooms we all get our privacy. I believe it has a couple of bathrooms which will be great. The feature we like best though is the hot tub and over sized hammock. :) Well I'll keep you all updated as we go. Pictures as they come. ... read more
