Today was fun (for me, not for Jon) I wanted to go to a couple of festivals in Denver. One was a chalk art festival, where Denver based artists draw art using chalk on the pavement of downtown. There were about 100 artists and some of the work was amazing. We took Churchy and spent about an hour and a half wondering around Larimer Square - Jon was more interested in the food stands than the art and Churchy was more interested in barking at everything and everyone. We then walked to the Civic Centre Park, where the Capitol Hill's people's Fair was on. This is the biggest festival in Denver and is basically a mixture of live music and hundreds of stalls selling local food, wine and services. Jon managed to eat 3 hot dogs, ... read more

Geo: 39.7437, -104.979"Off I go!"Pretty lame for the title of my first blog entry. I could have defaulted to the cliche "every journey begins with a single footstep" or something along those lines. I could fall back on my programming experience and go with "Hello, world". Or maybe, just "Wwweeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!"Eh. Spent last night in the bed of truck (might as well get used to it) outside the home of some good friends. Texted her at 6:50 am: "You guys up?" "I am. Are you in your truck?" "Yep! Be right in. :)"But you probably don't really care. The last thing I want this blog to be is a pre-pubescent diary. "And today, I did this, and this, and this, and ate this, and then saw this..." Of course, there will be some of that. I want ... read more

This is a test of our blog site where we hope to have updates of our family trip to New Zealand & Australia. We take off tomorrow and will likely start by getting a rental car at LAX and going to the beach for 3-4 hours to get some exercise in prior to sitting on the long flight to Auckland The pictures above were taken after the Neal Morse Band show in Denver on May 25th. The band lead by Prog Rock genius Neal Morse who was backed by Randy George on the bass and the amazing Mike Portnoy on drums. They had an excellent father-son duet on guitar (the father also played violin & flute, the son played cello and sang some back-up as well), two other keyboard players, a saxophone player/percussionist and a guest ... read more

I finally get to check out of the dodgy hostel and am picked up by Austen to go snowboarding. We meet at Jess and Austen's place, which is a really really really nice apartment, and I suit up with some thermal gear Jess has lent me. We are heading to Arapahoe Basin, a place which both of them frequent, along with Dan, Mel and Scott. The drive there is pleasant with some great scenery. It takes a little over an hour to get there but some of the views of the mountains are spectacular. The mountains are snowcapped and in some areas the road has been snowploughed, leaving a ridge of packed snow. The mountains are also covered with pine trees which are densely packed together. This was very different from the mountains I usually see, ... read more

We are in the land of Dorothy , driving across Kansas , pushing the dodge to all its limits, we thought it was time to fill you in on the last few months. In February we said goodbye to Andrea, Ken and Mel as they went across to Vancouver by train, as Callan missed his brother so much he decided to stay in Banff, work the second half of the winter and finish our road trip with us. He moved into the Grizzly house into the main suit, the upstairs empty laundry room, which was a total size of 6ft by 8ft, and as we found out the average jail cell is 6ft by 10ft, definitely luxury and comfort for Cal over the next 2 months. Cal also snapped up a job at Mt Norquay working ... read more

The day started, well, it just continued from the pub crawl with a shuttle pick up at 5am. I arrive at LAX really early for my flight and I was confident to catch some Z's at the boarding gate. So I take my time, make sure everything is packed (not that I had time to go back and get it anyway), toilet break and then check my pack in. That wasn't too bad but then I was confronted with the longest queue I've seen. The queue headed out the door for security checks. I was told there was another one upstairs so I thought it MAY be shorter, but same story, the queue headed out the door. I was in line for almost an hour before I made it to the security checkpoint. First time I ... read more

Well... We got back from the mountains last night after an overnight stay in a lovely apartment in the ski resort of Keystone. We spent two days on the slopes at a resort just down the road called Arapahoe Basin. I picked it up the technique quickly but after getting cocky and trying a larger slope a couple of times, I felt really out of control, fell and hit my head, which then bounced on the ground 3 times, so I got scared and just kept to the almost flat snow! After the days skiing, we spent an hour in the hot tub at the apartment, which was surrounded by snow. The snow started falling as we tried to wash away our aches and pains...as we were there off season, we had the entire complex to ... read more

I will summarise today quickly for you... shower breakfast in 'The Original Pancake House' - overwhelmingly huge portions that put me off breakfast!! Not sure why they feel the need to add home fries to everything! REI is like a massive Blacks which sells everything outdoorsy. We spent a good two hours in there and I ended up with a new coat, courtesy of Jon. downtown - I really like it. It is small but perfectly formed! Got a free mall ride there (trams that stop at every junction) Cheesecake Factory - had a nibble for lunch and one of their infamous passion fruit mojitos. Mile High point - we walked the rest of downtown to the civic hall, where we reached the mile high point of Denver. We randomly saw a red squirrel munching on ... read more
