DENVER and ROCKY MOUNTAINS
After travelling 17 hours by train we got to Denver, a city which sits in a valley 1600m above sea level. We didn't exactly know what to do in this city, but our goal was to climb Pikes Peak and to visit Rocky Mountains National Park. Couldn't wait to see it!
Because we arrived to Denver quite early – before 8am – we went to check in to the hostel.
I (Dari) have to tell you that every time we think we have been in some strange hotel, place....we always find a stranger place and this one was the strangest 😊)) Anyway, we checked in and went to rent some car. We rent a Dodge – a cheap American car and because Joost still doesn't have his driver licence I had to drive 😊) We decided to take it easy the first day, so we drove up to the Pikes Peak which is 14,115ft or 4,302m high mountain. Thanks to the Pikes Peak highway, I would call it road to the clouds, we could go to the top of this mountain, the only highway in the US leading up as high as 4,302m. The way up
wasn't that easy, we had to overcome over 156 turns, climbing over gravel and paved sections. The higher we went, the more dizzy we felt. Arrived at the top of the Pikes Peak we were drunk!!! 😊))

The way down was much easier and faster.. we were getting to feel much better. After travelling all night and climbing the Pikes Peak we got hungry so we stopped at China restaurant for dinner. I was sooo looking forward to their soup! 😊) And because the food made us even more tired, we decided to go back to Denver.
Next day after we got ready, we drove to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Just the road to get there was beautiful and I tell you why – Americans don't like walking so their roads take you as far as possible and we were driving trough the park almost all the time which was beautiful 😊)) Anyway we came into the park and we started to walk trough it. Our goal was to get to some falls. The weather that day was wonderful which made the day even better. We could walk good 3 hour in snow, up and down,
along small river, passing small lakes and than... our way have been stopped 😞( the nature and the season decided for us. Our way have been stopped by snow. Until Joost sunk so deep in to snow that we couldn't go further and decided to go back. Breathing was more difficult, moving as well. But because we really liked the place there, we took other road and drove around the park and than back to Denver. Than happened a think, which made us to stay one more day in Denver 😞 We didn't bring the car back in time that means we had to bring the car the other day and that was the problem. Our train was leaving at 8am already so we couldn't make it at all... 😞
You know, on the other hand, we just changed our tickets and stayed one more day.
This extra day we spent exploring Denver. The weather was great that day, about which later we read that it was a record warm day for Denver, 27 degrees Celsius 😊. Although Denver is a nice looking city, there wasn't much to do at the time we were there. Many places were closed
and both the Pepsi centre and the Football stadium were closed because of some events. Never the less did we have a good day soaking up the suns energy and preparing our self for the 33 hour train ride the next day which proved not to be necessary but we will tell you about that the next time!!!!!
