Back to Death Valley! We were here on our Texas trip, but didn't get to see everything that we wanted to check out, so now we're back again.... read more
We went back to Zabriskie Point, just because it's so interesting.
I went hiking a bit this time. It was fun to strike out into the wasteland for a quarter mile or so.
Going out from the viewpoint let me see some things I hadn't before, like this large wash.

What a great start to our trip! We weren't able to do some of the things that we had hoped to because there was still too much snow, but on the other hand the snow made some other things more fun and interesting. It was a great day!... read more
There was a lot of snowmelt all along our drive.
When we arrived at Lake Tahoe it was 71 degrees, sunny, and gorgeous.
There was still a ton of snow, but the roads were clear.

(I have also posted this on my personal blog at nicnakis.com) Into the Mountains Every road leads to somewhere. When Nathan and I left the monastery, I was using Google Maps on my phone to check the route to the next destination. There were 3 options, within about 5 minutes total travel time of one another, but they each went totally different directions. One started North, one started South, and one started East. As the King's Canyon Nyahbinghi Tabernacle was basically due east of me, I chose the route that headed to the east and thus into the mountains. It looked like the most direct route to me, but I was wrong. We began with a left turn. Having come in from the other side, this entire route was new to us. No backtracking. Forward, ever ... read more

(This is a cross-post with my personal blog at nicnakis.com) Nathan and I woke up in a place called Woodland, California. The sun was up early and so were we, taking a few minutes to polish-off the leftover Laos food from the night before. With only about 3 hours' drive to our next destination (in San Miguel), we weren't in much of a hurry. But, considering that our original plan had been to camp at the monastery the night before, we wanted no more delays. We didn't actually know anything about what the program at the monastery would entail. All I'd seen was a simple image, shared with me through a messaging app (Viber, I think?), all in Amharic. The only information in English was the date and the address. As we drove the dusty California ... read more

(This is a cross-post with my personal blog at nicnakis.com) One of my favorite movies of all time is a notorious failure, the 1969 blockbuster bomb that almost bankrupted a studio, Paint Your Wagon. This blog has nothing to do with that. So why bring it up? There is a song in the film that says, "I was born under a wandering star," and that's the part I'm talking about. I have always felt that I was born under a wandering star, figuratively speaking, in that I have this sort of unstoppable wanderlust that forces me to move from time to time. This April, Nathan and I went on a road trip. We had a weekend alone, basically, with my parents out traveling on the East Coast, my mother-in-law in Kenya, my wife working without a ... read more

Disneyland is one of the most desired place in US, especially for kids. Its a place where everyone can enjoy. There are 2 parks : Disneyland Theme park and Adventure park. I would recommend staying there for atleast 1 night so that you get sufficient time to cover both parks. And preferably plan on weekdays, else you would spend most of your time in queues that are much longer on weekends. Disneyland offers stay in their own hotel / resort and they also collaborate with neighborhood hotels to provide combo deals with park tickets and accommodation. We chose one such hotel (The Anaheim Hotel) right across the street from Disneyland entrance. The package included a one park - one day access and we had to choose the dates for each park. Park hopper option is also ... read more

On our way to the island of Oahu! We were picked up early in the morning by our friend David in his Escalade with just enough room for Vivian to share a seat with whoever would take her (Nathan, Steve, Tory all took turns.) At the airport, LAX, we had a funny moment where Vivian was asked which way she wanted to get up to the next level by pointing at 2 options, the escalator or the elevator. She didn't know the name of the escalator, so she made up the name step-a-vator! The flight went pretty well, Vivian had a good nap and the 6 hours to Hawaii is not bad when you are anticipating what is there. Plus, Tory brought some great toys and books to entertain the kids. Once landing in Honolulu, Steve ... read more

We camped on BLM land at the south entrance of Joshua Tree National park with our friends Patti, Karl, Stacey, & Walt. We spent 2 days in the park exploring the treasures it has to offer. The Joshua Trees reminded us of something out of a Dr. Seuss book. The rock climbing was so fun. So different from any national park we have been to before.... read more

So, I have been under the weather lately, so not much news or email updates. Here are some pearls of whatever you want. “We should try to be the parents of our future rather than the offspring of our past.” — Miguel de Unamuno Pinot Noir is the most commonly mispronounced wine name. Apparently, an average of 2,380 people search for how to correctly say the world-famous French wine each month. (It's PEE-noh nwar, in case you were wondering). Expedia shows the ideal day to book a flight is Sunday. For domestic flights, you can get the best airfare by booking at the end of the weekend. Doing so can save you around 5%. For international flights, the savings are nearly 10%. Barium nitrate is insoluble in 6M Nitric Acid. (I remember that from freshma... read more

From Explored Plant (Sara Horton), some pretty good hacks and hints for your pre-flight enlightenment. Take a photo of your parking location-Back when I drove to the airport often, I always parked in the same spot, always. I could find my car in my sleep. But I tend to have problems finding my rental car, often forgetting either the color, make or location!!! Contacts vs glasses-Long flights are difficult for contact lens wearers, particularly if you are able to sleep. Though I no longer wear glasses or contacts, I carry some artificial tears just in case. A refillable water bottle-This is one hint I rarely follow. Why? I tend to lose nice bottles. And they usually weigh more than a disposable plastic bottle. To each his own, I say. But it will save money! Always know-Certain ... read more
