A visit to San Francisco is not complete without a ride down Lombard Street (the world-famous crooked street). Earlier we walked down it, but today as we departed for Santa Cruz we decided to put caution to the wind and ride the roller coaster! I don't know who was more scared "me" (the driver) or the walkers as they jumped out of our way. Before cruising the coast, we decided to drop in on a few old friends as we made our way out of San Francisco...Mrs Doubtfire (Robin Williams movie) and the Tanner family (Full House TV show)! Unfortunately, they were not there...but we enjoyed seeing their homes and knocking at their door! On our way, we stopped here and there along the coast... Land's End is at the mouth of the Golden Gate, this ... read more

Got up to a fairly early start to the day. Had a little toast and coffee and drove off - headed for Ano Nuevo - home of the elephant seal. Well, no sooner did I get off and going when I had to stop and see the strawberry farm! A few pictures later, and I was off again. Drive through Santa Cruz and head to Donvan Landing ( I think) for another stop at the bakery. Saved my treats for a later snack. Then - don't you know - I find a pick your own strawberry farm, which of course meant another stop! Yummy and fresh! On my way again. Finally made it to Ano Nuevo for some elephant seals! After a 40 minute hike over the fields and down a few sand dunes - all ... read more

Coastal Driving Today we drove up the California coast, and by we I really mean me. The problem with driving up the coast is the driving. When driving you are not able to look at the surroundings as much as you would like due to having to actually watch the road. And when you are driving you are unable to take photos as much as you would like, creating even more frustration. My co-pilot (Stephen) did assist with a few pics, but it just wasn't the same. An early morning for all of us, Donald was off to his conference and the kids and I walked to a local bakery for breakfast. The city was quiet and calm this morning, a vast difference from last night. We then headed down the highway making our way to ... read more

THE BASICS Well, we are back with our RV and tow car, intent on enjoying some sun, warmth, and learning as we wander around California for a couple of months. We spent several days in Pleasanton, where the vehicles had spent a few months in storage at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Then to San Jose, where we visited the Tech Museum of Innovation. And now to the Coast, where our campground is in the hills and redwoods, and we strolled along the beach and in town in Santa Cruz. THE FLUFF The temperature read -4 as we neared the Manchester Airport early on the morning of the 24th - it wasn't hard to fly away from that. I had a cold which made the plane flights unpleasant and dozy. One interesting discovery: the attendants kept announcing ... read more

Tuesday Oct. 9 - We got into Santa Cruz at around 5pm and set up our campsite with a great view of the ocean. Wednesday Oct. 10 - We went to a huge Disc Golf course and met a local disc golfer (Jacob) who played the course with us and gave us a tip about local restraunts. We took his advise and got some amazing mexican food that we brought back to the campsite for dinner. Thursday Oct. 11 - Stayed at the campsite and played cribbage. We walked on the beach and I saw a bobcat. Friday Oct. 12 - We played Disc Golf again and we're heading to Arizona tomorrow.... read more

By Monday our time was up in San Fran & we needed to hit the road to make it to LA for the theme parks and our flight to Fiji. Although we had a 5 day road trip down the California coast ahead of us, we didn't want to leave San Francisco! The plan was to spend 5 days on a road trip to LA with Mitch driving while I could chill out & admire the view while Mitch could enjoy the drive as he loves driving. But our car rental place would not let him drive as just before we left the UK he lost his drivers licence...so step up Anna, aka Maureen from driving school - as I have been known as I am equally as bad!! I was very excited and scared at ... read more

Today, I am in one of California’s ultimate beach towns, Santa Cruz. Cities near Los Angeles get all the publicity in this department, because they are much larger, but the much of the culture started here. The Santa Cruz Museum of History and Art covers the story. Santa Cruz History Santa Cruz’s early history mirrors that of California as a whole (see ). The first inhabitants were Native Americans. Those who settled here were very good basket makers. The first Spanish expedition arrived in 1592. The area became a center of cattle ranching. Spanish missionaries built a mission here in 1791, which gave the settlement its name. American settlers started to appear in the early 1800s, mostly traders. ... read more
