Woah!
California Burger at Wahoo's, Pier 39, San Fran You’d think Pier 39 would be next to Pier 38. But not in San Francisco, they’re at opposite ends of the wharf. So a half mile walk was needed to get to Pier 39 to try the recommended clam chauder in sourdough bread bowls. Clam chauder didn’t sound so appealing so we opted for the California Burger, much more geographically specific I thought. We made friends with a whole bunch of sea lions who barked like crazy while we waited for the Santa Clara girls. Maybe for security, 7 of them showed up. We weren’t complaining at all! A mad rickshaw driver gave us the most entertaining ride only 20 metres to the parking lot.
The hour car trip back down to Santa Clara University showed me that hip hop runs deep in the veins of America and preceded a great night where icebreakers weren’t needed. It seemed as though we’d met all these girls before, and Danny, who drank from an ‘I love Jesus’ shot glass, had a laugh that I’ll never forget and a dirty, dirty mouth. We were only planning to stay for 2 nights, 6 days later we left SCU. We’d also seen Santa Cruz, played

Sea Lions at Pier 39 volleyball on the beach and enjoyed a bonfire by the waves while camping at Manresa. Everyday at SCU was much the same, wake up on the couch, accompany one of the girls to the Benson Center for brunch, sunbake, play beach volleyball, lunch at Benson, help out with an assignment and discuss our views on the world, dinner at Benson, then finally share each others drinking games and have yet another great night.
I took home the trophy at go-karting one night, and after thinking long and hard about the massive menu at the Cheesecake Factory, chicken medallions turned out to be the best meal in the west, not to mention we rolled there in Steph’s Hummer, and later on surfed it.
So many friendships were made in less than a week. I’ll see some people again, hopefully most of them. Santa Clara was a great chillout after a hectic week on the road, I’m not fussed that I missed out on the Golden Gate or Alcatraz, no bridge or landmark is better than spending time with completely new people of whom you can relate to so much and feel like you’ve known for years. We left Santa
