After about sixty years of air travel, airports, and airplanes, I have seen many crazy things. Here are just a few: Poor hygiene-well, first of all, most men do NOT wash their hands after using the men's room. That in itself is as disgusting as it gets. But some other culprits will clip their toe nails on board, file their nails, clean their ears, or place their stinky feet on the back of my seat!!! Or how about the amateur dental hygienists on board who must floss their teeth after EVERY meal?? Don't even get me started on dandruff, acne pickers, and nose hair trimmers. Pet stuff-you can guess what happens when a "therapy" dog has to poop while on the plane, even in first class. Not fun!!! Worse yet, how about a pet snake? Yes, ... read more

4th and King Street, San Francisco– Several months ago (although it feels like yesterday... time really does stand still when the seasons blend together) I found myself at the 4thand King Street train station waiting for our ride back to the Salinas Valley, which I have accepted as my home now. As we were waiting, I had flash backs to the last few times I was at that station waiting for a train, and how much my life had changed each time. The first time was my first visit to San Francisco since childhood. It was in November of 2017, and I was interviewing all over the United States for a new job. I had an interview in a little suburb north of San Jose, and decided to (finally) take my old college roommate and darling ... read more

Here’s a quick virtual visit for you to the Californian Academy if Science in San Francisco. Christine and I went for lunch at Twitter and then took a Lyft to The Golden Gate park and this amazing place. Butterfly forests, reef and river environments, penguins and planets. Enjoy 😊 (that octopus! 😯😔)... read more

We have been in San Francisco for a bit more than one month now. We are pleasantly surprised. It has been better than what we hoped. We live in Larkspur, a very green suburb with amazing forest walks right at our door step. We live in the hills. This is great for the views, but requires a bit of effort to cycle up the hill. The climb is more than 100m vertical. Doable, but tiring if we do it every day. The big surprise has been the quality of the food. It is much better than we expected. High quality fruits and vegetables, an amazing range of choice of foods. Lots of different types of supermarkets. It's a bit overwhelming at first, but it's nice to have such a choice of good food from all over ... read more

We used the remaining hours on our 24 hour HOHO bus ticket to get us down to the docks to catch the ferry across to Alcatraz from Pier 33 in the harbour area. The trip was about a mile and a quarter and only took 12 minutes but everything was very efficient. The weather was cool but fine and the crossing was smooth. Brochures and maps were available outside the Visitor Centre on the island, with an honesty box for the $1 cost. Many people just took them for free. C’mon, it’s only a dollar – where’s your conscience? We saw the sally port, guard house and guard tower on immediate arrival, then the post exchange and officers’ club (now a ruin), the electrical repair shop, mortuary, chapel, warden’s house, lighthouse, barracks, recreation yard, water tower ... read more

I'm not driving yet but Herve is comfortable driving in US in our new Nissan Maxima. We have made a couple of visits to San Francisco over the Golden Gate bridge to explore some areas. This is Ocean Beach which is a vast beach front with a concrete breaker wall. Many people stroll around with their dogs, there are a few homeless around and massive seagulls. The cutest thing is the little Plover birds which spend their days racing to an fro with the flow of the waves (Grazing on the little creatures when the water recedes. Golden Gate park is a massive park in the middle of the city. Canadian Geese, squirrels, coyote! and bison!! Beautiful park!... read more

I wasn’t looking forward to this journey; a) it was overnight and I’m hopeless with those, as I can’t sleep on planes, b) we had to transit to another plane somewhere in the middle and our experiences with plane swaps had not been good so far and, c) we were flying with American Airlines and the airline crew I had spoken with in Hawaii had told me they were the pits. It didn’t get off to a good start as we were told, at the departure gate, that the flight was overbooked and three volunteers were needed to move to another flight the next day. OK, well that can be anybody but us given that we have a connecting flight to catch. Much to my surprise we actually boarded and took off on time, at 11.25 ... read more

Herve has had a dream of working in one of the High-tech companies in Silicon Valley. We both loved San Francisco when we travelled there in 2015 with the girls. The journey to get here has been a long and challenging one in many ways. The interview process took long time to master and there were many skills that needed to be learned and sharpened. The house also required a lot of attention: we needed to leave it in good condition for the girls and I wanted to get rid of all my stuff so they could feel it was their home for the few years we were gone. This took months! tossing, scrubbing, painting, repair work, gardening (Lisa and Greg did most of this) and lots and lost of sorting. Herve went through many initial ... read more

It was our final full day in San Francisco. We were advised by the owners of the property that they would be returning from lake Tahoe for one night only before jetting off somewhere else. Yesterday when we arrived back at our accommodation at 09:30pm, the house was in relative darkness. Lights were on in the front room but these had been turned to low on the dimmer switch. The owners were at home but had already retired to the upper house. We wouldn’t have to sit and make small talk after all!! This morning I awoke about 8:00am to the sound of movement in the kitchen, then silence. Fifteen minutes later more movement. We couldn’t stay shut in our room forever although we still had to remember we were guests in someone’s house. It somehow ... read more
