historic cars - Alfa
unfortunately not open to public, altho big windows on Van Ness close to Opal Hotel San Fran - 9 June
yes this is day zero minus one! - after a long bloggerama this morning finally out on a 38 trolley to check out 1805 Geary aka the Fillmore Auditorium - it may be a rock "sacred site" but it certainly does not look like one! simply a blank 3 storey brick building with a sign saying The Fillmore - no posters with coming attractions or nuthin' - check Wikipedia for the "real" story about the Fillmore and how it moved to the West venue nr Market etc and now seems almost a franchise, with sites in Denver and Florida etc. Then a 38 trolley back to the cable car at California St to ride it down the hill to the financial district. Then I walked across thru Chinatown, which is fairly large (makes LA look a joke - which it was relatively) and this blends into North Beach where it becomes fairly Italianate - had some very nice rhubarb and zabaglione gelato at an artisanal place - altho they spelt it is "zabajone' - which being a pedant I naturally spelt out to them. Not to mention "fejiosa" - which they didn't have at the time
but it is "feijoa" thanks. A short coffee somewhere else then another trolley back to town to get the L line Metro (just to say I had - and get my $20 worth)- tram underground then above ground out to near the SF Zoo - somewhere - but ended up close to the beach. Had a quick look at real suburbia then back to Castro on same tram/Metro route - Castro is the gay HQ but this seemed mostly shops - and as I was not cruising (?!) decided not to risk a sure thing food wise in trying a new restaurant but head back to Garcon! for round no.2 as that was on 22nd and Valencia - not too far away and due to grid could not get lost. Thru some very nice timber housing thanks.
This time at Garcon on the table du jour the PEI (Prince Edward Island - Eastern coast of Canada) mussels - lovely small mussels in a superb broth boasting the right amount of fennel and pernod - and chardonnay - superbe! Almost the best mussels ever I think. A french Sancerre with that - then a Californian chardonnay with the pan roasted
salmon with summer squash, swiss chard (but much better than silverbeet!) and basil cherry tomato coulis (the menu says). Then a dessert of pancake/crepes with banana rum. If you're ever in Mission definitely check this place out!
Then a trolley which headed thru Mission and into Van Ness and home - told you the SF transport system was excellent!
