On leaving San Franciso at the tail-end of a coast-to-coast USA road-trip three years ago, I promised to come back in the future. So here it is. The start of a new 4 week itinery, beginning (yeah!!!) and ending (nooo!) at the Golden Gate and taking in parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. First up, 4 days in San Francisco, checking out the Golden Gate park, Chinatown, Union Square, Japanese Tea Garden, Haight-Ashbury and Fisherman's Wharf before picking up the van and heading out to the open road. Well guys, here goes...I'm in San Francisco right now after a 4 hour flight from Chicago. I'm telling you, no joke, I sat next to a Buddhist monk the entire flight to Cali! Good omen? I think yes. I spent the night in the airport as the plane landed at around 12:30 Pacific time...so around 3am our time. Can I just tell you that I'm a hot mess right now? HOT MESS. My hair has been washed in an airport bathroom, and my B.O. is for sure a force to be reckoned with. Regardless, I'm sure I'll be fine. I'll be posting pictures as soon as I can. Love you all. ... read more

San Francisco was a wonderful stop. It is a beautiful old city and the people here are very friendly and helpful to visitors. We arrived and were set up by about 1:30 or 2:00 so set out on our first adventure downtown and to have dinner in China Town. We found out we are not very mass transit oriented. First problem being we left our Bart instructions from the RV park in our car. No problem, we can figure it out, ha. Actually we did figure the ticket machine and which train to take OK, it was getting off that presented the problem. We found a friendly native who told us to get off at Powell St., thank you nice person. First 6 stops the station name was on the left, 7th stop, no name hmmmm. ... read more

9th April Happy Birthday Di! What a fabulous place San Francisco is! The shopping, the food, the architecture, the people! The hills are very, very steep and great for walking (down that is - and not in high heels). The weather changes every 3 days they say. Friday was hot, Saturday was cold, Sunday is raining. Hopefully sunny again on Monday. Had a wonderful Italian meal on Friday night at a family run restaurant on Lombard Street. The dollar is at about 93 at the moment, so the costs are evening out. After all the BA strike talk it was a relief just to see our flight up on the departure boards! 11 hours later and we arrive in San Francisco to be met by Dan and Dave (Jamie's Dad). We headed to their house in San Carlos which is a beautiful area next to a canyon so the views are amazing - especially from Dave's brand new house. Still on English time we were happy to get some sleep after some food - bring on Christmas... Craig and I woke at 4am and couldnt get back to sleep so celebrated Christmas with an early morning beer and toasted the view! Christmas or anticipation of the rest of the trip - either way weren't able to get back to sleep and when the sun came up we took ... read more

Our morning started out early, with hopes of going through Golden Gate Park and marching far north to go over the bridge. I had seen pictures of the Palace of fine Arts in travel books, so we hoped to see that as well once we were in the Persisdo area. While we had been walking through the Japan Center Mall, we saw a few pastry/bread stores that was decided to visit for breakfast. Our hotel, as awesome as it is, has a horrible deal for breakfast. For $14/person you can get the breakfast bar but you get little more then yogurt and cereal, for an extra $4/person you may add scrambled eggs and chicken apple sausage. After we sat down to eat our breakfast and get a good idea of which direction to head to, ... read more

After a few delays from the airport, thanks to the weather in San Francisco, we finally made into the city we decided to spend our year anniversary. Being cheap, we took the BART from the hotel to the civic center and thought it best to walk to our hotel instead of call a taxi. The taxi ride $9, watching Jeff carry our heavy travel bag on his shoulder as we blindlessly navigated through a city we're never been too, priceless. We did make it to the hotel, and thankfully the weather was kind and stopped raining between the time we were in the airport and the time we took to walk to the hotel. As soon as we checked in, the rain realized it had granted us everything it could, and started up again. Because our ... read more
