Frances Ford Coppola
Crazy Town (aka San Francisco)
Arrived in SF around 4ish and slowly found our way to the Nob Hill Motor Inn (http://nobhillmotorinn.com/
) . Interesting hotel located near Polk St which is a strip that contains numerous eateries, bars and convenience stores. The hotel itself was clean but could do with new carpets etc. Location was excellent as the bus to Fisherman’s wharf was around the corner and a bus that goes direct to AT&T Park went past the front door. So car stayed neatly tucked away in the hotel whilst we rode the Muni (Local Bus service). Went searching for the evening meal, with such a range to choose we picked a little place called Street (http://streetrestaurant.com/
) and was pleasantly surprised with good food, wine and a Fig martini which took Gaynor’s fancy.
Started the day with getting our hop on hop off bus tour tickets (2 day) and proceeded to ride the Downtown bus which was a 90 min tour of the main part of SF including areas like Tenderloin, Nob Hill, Chinatown and Union Square. Got off the bus in Union Square and looked for breakfast. Stumbled over a café called
4 Wise monkeys
Hear no, See no, Speak no and Do no evil
Lefty O’Doul’s (http://www.leftyodouls.biz/
) . Lefty was a baseball player and his restaurant was full of memorabilia and I had Green eggs and Ham. Very nice. Got back to the tour depot and caught the tour bus to Sausalito via the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito is where the rich and possibly famous hang out. Running short for time we stayed on the bus and got back in time to go to see the Giant vs Marlins. Giants fans by far are the most vociferous when it comes to cheering for their team. It started from pitch one and continued through the whole game. The only issue we had was it was frickin’ freezing. Had no idea how cold it gets in SF. No problems getting home after the game, walked over the road and onto the bus straight to the hotel, sweet.
Back out for our 2nd
day on the bus, found ourselves at the Frances Ford Coppola building which has a café downstairs, upstairs still a working think tank for movies etc.
Then back on the bus for the greenline tour which took us through Haight-Ashbury district, birth of the hippy. Our guide was very entertaining.
If the rocks all over there is an earthquake
Back to the hotel for New York pizza and to bed early
Up early for breakfast which we had at the Buena Vista Café. The birthplace of the Irish Coffee. They have open seating which means you sit where ever there is a spare seat, we ended up sharing with 2 other groups of people who joined us at our table. Very pleasant.
Off to join the queue for Alcatraz, got in line and went to get our tickets scanned and got told “Nice tickets, for TOMORROW” Whoops.
What to do? Got the ferry to Sausalito and had a good day trolling around the shops. Back to find a feed and dined at a French style Bar called La Folie in Polk st. Very nice
Pretty much the same as yesterday except we got to go to Alcatraz today. Well worth the trip with a great audio tour. Back for baseball with Oakland v Redsox. Drove over to the game and luckily we left early as traffic was a shocker. Game went extra with Redsox winning in the 11th
. The interesting thing about the whole night was there seemed to be more
Redsox supporters than A’s, they were vociferous also the amount of people that leave prior to the game ending. A general procession of people leaving from about the 7th
innings onwards. Drive home was a lot better than earlier and back to pack for the drive to Seattle.
Referring to the heading, as will all major cities there are homeless people who beg for stuff etc. San Francisco have similar but they are, for want of a better word, CRAZY. They rant and carry on and can be quite aggressive. And they are everywhere. A young girl was attacked by one at our bus stop just prior to us getting there, blood all over the footpath. Not nice and sometimes quite scary. Thus my reference to Crazy Town.
