Hello! J'ai ... read more

Dec 21 SHOPPING day Eager to get an early start we get up early, minor issue arises- the shops aren't opening until 0930. Decide to go out for b/f and end up at Cafe de la Presse on Grant (our street) near Union Square. Turns out to be a good move- decent coffee, Christine, Geoff and I split a breakfast basket and fruit platter and still have left overs. As in virtually every other food place the portions are huge. The coffee is served in a cup as big as a cereal bowl (actually that's not a bad thing). Tip. Leave and Christine and I head towards the shops. Geoff is on a bird mission so goes his own way. I make it as far as Old Navy and emerge an hour and a half later. ... read more

Today we fly to San Francisco via LAX with Alaska Air. Enjoy the last CM lunch before catching a cab to the airport. It has been such a great trip. Just as well we are leaving- my body is hurting in all sorts of odd places- you know those tiny little intercostal ones for instance (AKA Trapeze Muscles!). The flights are comfortable, we clear customs in LAX with absolutely no queue and no fuss. This would be a great way to enter the US next time- seriously no queue and a pleasant experience (? how is this possible?? the usual terminal is nightmare and takes >hour. Ultra boring few hours in LAX (we actually succumbed to the dreaded McDonalds- I still don't know what possessed us) before the SFO flight. Cab it to Ricks Apartment in ... read more

Just a quick note to say I've arrived safely in San Francisco! There's a huge market on Columbus today so I've had a mooch around there and went in the Beat Movement museum (just because my brother is a fan... I can't say I'm that impressed with Kerouac or Burroughs... although Bukowski is alright). I'm doing a night tour of Alcatraz tonight... ooo spooky! Will update again as soon as possible. Much love, Streets.... read more

We were all awake by 6am local time which wasn't too bad. After a breakfaast of various tasty muffins and corn falkes we headed off to walk to the crooked part of Lombard Street on an overcast morning. Then we climbed to the 150 foot tall coit tower but it was too misty to pay to go up it as the views were limited. Then off for a walk to Chinatown arriving at the interesting and unique cable car museum where you can see the actual cables going round drus then out under the streets to pull the cars. They were working on repairing one and when we went out to catch a car home the line they were working on was our one and the cars were out of action until cable repaired! We walked ... read more

After getting adults off to the Fancy Foods we piled the kids in the truck and were off to Lucas Films then the Exploratorium. We had planned to eat lunch with Clayton at Lucas Films but he got busy with work so we just did a little walking and visiting. Fortunately we’d brought plenty of food so we were able to have a picnic. We got to the Exploratorium and for those of you who are thinking of visiting, across the street to the north is a parking lot, maybe a 5 minute walk. When we were there it was free. We found a picnic table close by and set out our food, fed kids then off to the Exploratorium. The Exploratorium is in what was the Palace of Fine Arts; it is an old building ... read more

Jonah Raskin's American Scream: Allen Ginsberg's Howl And The Making Of The Beat Generation was the book I opted for. The obvious, touristy thing would have been to purchase a copy of Howl – we were in City Lights Books after all. Luckily there was a vacant rocking chair upstairs where my friend rocked away while I scanned through every single available item before picking up the before mentioned title. The cashier was too cool for school. He had an assymetrical London haircut and what Britons call NHS spectacles. At the time of writing this he probably is a cashier no more. He looked like the type who lands a design job sooner or later. Bless him. One of the very few customer service people in San Francisco I liked. No over-enthusiasti... read more
