San Francisco, Golden Gate Park. 21-11-2002. I'm struggling up to Nob Hill and it is hard work. Cable cars that look highly familiar from many movies I have seen featuring San Francisco, pass me packed with camara hung tourists. Just for the fun of it I grasp the side of the cable car and let it pull me up - a bit like a do with trams in Amsterdam when I do my work as a bicycle messenger though there are no hills like Nob Hill in Amsterdam - and just like back home people grasp camaras hastily for a quick photo shoot. But I tire of my new found carreer as a professional photo model in mere minutes letting go of the cable car and continueing my struggle uphill leaving fat germans in colorfull Hawaii ... read more

San Francisco, 19-11-2002. The only other occupant in my dormitory of the hostel is a pleasant enough phillipino bloke who works as a male nurse at some hospital near the airport. Not that I see much of him, he works during the nights and sleeps during the day. He told me he does five twelve hours shifts a week and then has two days off which he spends with relatives in Nevada. Basically I pretty much have the dorm to myself though last night lying on my bed and reading a book while making serious work of a big caguama mexicam beer, this mad aussie storms into my room - time close to 21.30 h. - long and wild dishevelled blond hair falling down his boying looking face, wearing a T-shirt full with dirty looking stains ... read more

San Francisco, 18-11-2002 I cycle through one neighborhood after the other, I visit San Francisco's beaches and cycle out all the way to the airport, discovering this laid back and cozy city to the max. I drink a big caguama mexican beer in Golden Gate Park watching the instanteneous percussion parties erupt - sh*t, wish I had my african drum with me so I could join - on a sunny afternoon with scores of people participating reminding me of Queen's day back home in my beloved Amsterdam. The african/jamaican drum's rolls brings my mind back to my trips in Africa. The Golden Gate Park feels very similar to the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, maybe not identical twins but nonetheless. From the Fisherman's Warf I can see the skyline obscured by the skyscrapers of the Financial District. ... read more

San Francisco, 17-11-2002. Through the early morning fog I see the justly famous Golden Gate Bridge. This world famous bridge I first heard about when I was a mere kid, a boy going to school in the south of Holland. What was here name...ah yes, Miss Guus, who was an enormously fat woman who never got married and therefore focused all her motherly love on the kids she was in charge off at the primary school she worked at. And you can believe me, she had way too much of that mother instinct to lavish on us. It even dwarved that massive fat female body of hers. Yeah, it was this grand dame who first got me interested in travelling. When she was talking about the wonders of the world I would go into my private ... read more

San Francisco, 16-11-2002. The Fisherman's Warf seems to be the main tourist hang-out in SanFrancisco with lazy seals asleep on the piers ignoring the excited tourist busyly making photos of them. many streetsellers here which could be interesting if I ever wanna return, I presume I could sell my Indian Games here making enough money to survive and even getting some if not all of my plane ticket back in the process. The Castro seems to be the main gay area with little restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries and charming little shops. The Mission is mostly inhabited by mexicans and is my favourite by far in San Francisco. Market Street where my hostel is located, has more homeless people - most of them blacks - per square meter than any other street in any other city ... read more

San Francisco, 14-11-2002. My free camping place last night was under a massive cycamore tree whose branches were hanging all the way to the ground. I could have even survived a hurricane under that enormous wonder of creation. It's not far anymore to San Francisco but despite the city's close proximity I cycle through a remarkably desolate country, an undeveloped coastal stretch of rocks and the occasional beach. Beaches with a wild and unpredictable surf rolling in. Some of these beaches are inhabited by seal while other are the property of sun tanned surfers, mostly young people who muscular bodies show off a healthy life style. Blond girls that could have walked right out of Baywatch discussing among themselves the surfing prowess of their boy-friends who are out at sea riding the waves. Every so often ... read more

Right……so a bit of catching up to do. Day 2. Saturday, after sitting up writing this drivel on Friday night, I slept like a baby till midday, so I decided that it was too late for the bike ride. The alternative I came up with was pretty good. I walked the 8 k or so to the coast - walking west all the way to the open ocean. Of course I saw some interesting things along the way. A really old Grandma on a micro-scooter was very cool - bless!. And the Thanksgiving 1-upmanship was pretty funny. Some houses had a pumpkin in the window, or on the porch. As I moved west, the suburbs got more upmarket and 1 pumpkin was no longer enough. Attached is a pic of a ‘2-pumpkin’ porch, and then I ... read more

Georgia was in her element because she saw plenty of squirrels, chipmunks and deer, we didn't see any bears which would have been nice at a distance. After two nights at Yosemite we drove to Monterey, it was beautiful next to the see, we saw sea lions on all of the rocks around the jetty and a sea otter swimming around fishermans wharf when we were waiting for dinner, we ate at Bubba Gumps ( the big dude from the Forrest Gump movie who started his own shrimping business!) and we received our first parking ticket. I will pay this after I get off from here. The next day we drove to San Francisco, wow these streets are certainly straight up and down, we returned the car to the rental people, with no dents no scratches ... read more

A Busy Day... Another beautiful day in San Francisco! Our morning started with a lengthy stroll along the wharf with a haunting view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge in the distance. After we checked out of the Hostel, we perused some local art galleries and even became part of the art scene when an "artist" sketched us! (Ok, it was more like a bad caricature, but fun none the less.) Hopping aboard the faithful transit system, we ended up back at the Golden Gate park, this time hair decked with flowers! There, we visited the flower conservatory and met more interesting floks (one of which tried rapping to us about being " A fly mamasita with flowers in her hair." Yeah. Hope he doesn't quit his day job... We rode all over San Fran ... read more

Today we went to Muir woods, one of the last places where the giant redwoods can be seen. They were wonderful and the place was peaceful and the trees majestic. The highest is over 250ft tall. You can see scars where the trees survived a fire over 100 years ago. Then on to Sausalito. A very expensive yachting port where the houses are over 2 million dollars and upwards. We then went on a harbour cruise. As we approached the golden gate bridge, the fog cleared and we had wonderful views of the bridge and back towards Alctraz.... read more
