See he really is Mexican, not German
BEAR: Todays destination is china town, its the last day of our trip and we have alot to see. The plan was to return to Fishermens, park, find the cable cars and off we go! Sounds simple right? The bug who secretly has control issues decided to let the bear drive. I think she still regrets it. Being in a strange city with obviously rude drivers it is my mind set to stay out of the way and take it easy, I am after all on vacation- not so much the bugs subscribing driving morals, the good news is we made it.
BUG: I AM NOT A CONTROL FREAK! I have some place to go- get out of my way! Yes- we arrived at the Wharf and parked directly across from Pier 39. After careful consideration, I made a corporate decision to extend the 4PM pick up of the car to 8PM for a meer $10.00 more said the Valet. The even better news was- we were a staright "B" line (that's code for Bear and Bug line) to the Biscoff Coffee shop for yes- you guessed it another Biscoff Latte. This time I sweet talked Hansel who is not
Germany but Mexican? to give me and "extra" free cookie. As we waited my techy Bestie informs me that in order to make the Biscoff flavored latte's all you have to do is add the Biscoff spread to coffee and milk. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! My coffee barista was nice enough to explain the ratio- and I will be making the Biscoff latte's in Burlington, WI. YEAH! And I got 3 cookies not 2. So I think we are headed left (out of the Wharf) and what does Bear do- turns right.....Hey- where you going? To "Sea" the Sea Lions one last time. OK Bear- we'll go see the sea lions. AND what do we run into on the way there? a 4 month old rescued pit bull walking her owner. So of course Bear pets and kisses and loves on her- then proceeds to tell the owner how to keep the dog from walking him. He politely nods and it is very clear he is totally whipped. Finally we are off to find the historical Cable cars. Ding ding.
BEAR: Leaving pier 39 we walked to where we would board a passing cable car, sitting on a bench
to review the map, an older gentle man asked us where we were going, Bug, who always does the talking, struck up conversation and learned that if we go to the main loading area and be one of the first to board we would avoid long lines and crowded cars. If bug and bear showed up in Vegas we would look like Penn and Teller. Score Bug thanks for her chattiness. Bug used a public bathroom that sanitizes itself after use, the door opened and you go in, when you exit the door closes and everything gets washed down, you can see the water draining from under the door- what will they think of next? We boarded the rice a roni express and as we were climbing a hill things didnt seem right. Our car stopped at a maintenance station and like a nascar pitt crew (only slower) a group of men came out and changed the arm that engages the cable that travels under the road. Back on track and moving much faster!!
BUG: China Town is called out and we hop off. As we start walking down the road- it doesn't seem to interesting. Hummmm, we start
happening on some markets and then take a turn left, ok, now it's getting good. One fresh fish market, then another and another- and I'm talking fresh as in some still moving, frogs, carpooling waiting for their final day of existence, a turtle (sorry Jeff and Jordan) that didn't make it, chicken feet galore! Many things that were unrecognizable and very concerning. As I'm trying to find a place that I can just get a potsticker- with nothing weird in it- or better yet someone that spoke english- a little China man walks up to me and asks what are you looking for? You want something to eat? At this point I leary, you have to watch out for these street guys that are planted to bring people to different restaurants and get a kick back, or maybe his brother, sister, mother or who knows owns it. I told him I wanted pot stickers, "Follow me" he says "I show you". Bear who is cautiously holding back follows along as I start chatting and walking. Jackie Chan 2 as he calls him self tells me he is a teacher of English in China who studied Philosophy and is working on
reading all 600,000 Christian knowledge books at Berkley. Yes he's a Christian which we often run into on our travels. Jackie takes us to a small restaurant and I give him $20.00 and tell him to get us what he wants minus any seafood or tomatoes. We are served pork dumplings, Sticky rice, spring roll, vegetable pot stickers and Steamed sweet roll stuffed with BBQ pork. All of it was good in my opinion- Bear maybe not. We talked with Jackie (i.e. Chow) while we ate- exchanged bible verses and addresses and promised to write with any scripture related questions- after all he could research it for us at Berkley! We prayed together and went on our way.
BEAR:Next destination Giardelli Square. We board another rice a roni express crowded this time, and just chat about Chow and the interesting lunch we had, only to reach the end of the line for the roni car- we got on the wrong line!! Maps fly open and planning reveals we need to go back to powell street and take the powell-hyde line, oh well it was a nice ride. We met a freshman college student from Saudi Arabia, well actually it
was bug who met him not the "silent bob" bear. Along our new route we passed by Lombardi street- Cindy at work recommended seeing it- there it was, there it goes, quirky little street all curly like a curly french fry. Reaching the end of the line again we exit the roni and pull out the map again. Where are we? Where is Giradelli square, Ill bet we are going to have to walk really really far....... turn head right- found it one block up the road!!
BUG: Bear being the thorough one- says we should walk around the square- so......we walk around the "block" Nothing on 3 sides so we end us cutting thru a entrance and find the shops. It is here that I find my final gift for my employee, some great items for people I love back home and of course......CHOCOLATE. It was good that we went her late int he day- I was a little tired and we were able to sit down in the shop and just take it all in- it is here at the shops that Mary found some gems to take back home too. SPOILER ALERT- Raspberry syrup to make
tea for Mr. Bear and she fell in love with some lotion but didn't buy it- she's been sniffing her hand every since she put it on. She'll buy it on line I'm sure. As we finished here- we started to head down the street to see Boudin's Bakery- the famous san francisco bread company and wandered back to our final destination- you guessed it Bicoff! After completing the fill circle of coffee life- we purchased the largest container of Biscoff spread and agreed to split it- Bear has to carry it. I had to get at least one taste of Dungeness Crab so I did and we picked our car up at 7:30- Good thing I extended the time!
BOTH: Operation San Francisco complete. It's been a fantastic trip- every night we returned to camp we were exhausted. We have great stories- some of which we shared but many more to tell. Our bags are packed for our 7am flight home. The Air B&B experiment was a huge success. We could not have asked for a better place to stay......and it saved us so much money. Having an apartment is WAY BETTER than staying in a hotel room.
Historic Cable Car
aka Rice a Roni Express
I venture to say this is how we will travel in the future.......to our next wonderful destination. So as they say in Hawaii- Aloha.......hello and goodbye........and we'll blog you later!
P.S. thanks for tuning in!
