Off to Alcatraz! I was so excited for today, when booking my trip I was deciding whether to fly into LA or San Francisco and I thought that LA would be cheaper, but there wasn't really anything pulling me to visit there. When I found out the flights to San Francisco were the same price, it was a no-brainer. One of the reasons, I wanted to visit was to go to Alcatraz, when I was younger (a lot younger), a co-worker had been and had lent me a book written by one of the former prisoners, I can barely remember his life story now, but since then I've always wanted to visit. And after watching 'The Rock', one of my favourite films when I was a teenager/at uni. I had read online that you needed to ... read more

Day 9 Well last full day in San Fran and another brill time. Walked up Powell and down to fishermans wharf to catch the ferry to Alcatraz. Walked around the Island before heading up to the cell block for the audio tour. When you arrive you are in the shower room where all new inmates arrive, and it hits you how new inmates must have felt when they arrived on The Rock. Walking around the cells and listening to the audio you do get a sense of how life must have been like for the prisoners. What got me was how cold the place was and its summertime. Got to solitary cell block D where all the infamous inmates were housed, Capone, The Birdman, Machine gun Kelly. Finished the tour , caught the ferry back for ... read more

What a day!!! My alarm woke me up at 6.30, and I dragged myself out of bed, got ready and navigated myself through the streets to catch a cable car. With more unnessercery long videos of the cable car ride (The videos are temporarily out of order on this website but I'll put them up as soon as they fix it!) I made it down to pier 39. This is basically the tourist trap of San Fran, but I love it. Its a vibrant, colourful, tacky and almost fairground like area on the dock. I still had hours before my Alcatraz booking, so at around 7.30am I wandered through the empty pier 39. The locals were all setting things up and I vaguely felt like an intrusive tourist who was just too early. (Like when passengers ... read more

We are all headed out to Bali for Mary's daughter, Mariah, wedding. So included in this year's trip are our children! Before arriving in Bali, we decided to take a 2 day stop over in San Francisco. What an adventure we had to start. From fitting 4 adults and 8 suitcases along with 4 backpacks of 'essentials' into one taxi to Patrick getting up close and personal with TSA (yes, he got the full search!). Poor boy, they thought his carry on of snacks was contraband. Everything settled down after that and we arrive at our San Francisco hotel after 11:00pm.... read more

So, after going out with the boys, I collapsed into bed and forgot to book the tickets for Alcatraz! Get up and get on the computer and there are loads left for the day so pick the 12.30pm one thinking that will give us time to get breakfast or lunch & we have to move the car by 11am anyway. We get there around 12, i have made a packed lunch, so we get coffee and sit and eat. Get on the ferry and off we go! The ferry journey only takes a few minutes and we are there. When you get off you get a sense of the size of the place. It is pretty big. You also get a sense of how depressive it is too. We make our way up to the main ... read more

If you are planning a trip to San Francisco and want to visit Alcatraz, make sure to book your tour tickets in advance. We arrived to San Francisco on Saturday morning and planned to go to Alcatraz the same weekend, however our hotel concierge informed us that tickets were sold out and next availability wasn't until Tuesday (in fact, they often sell out few weeks in advance. We quickly booked a couple tickets for Tuesday afternoon using the official Alcatraz tour website http://www.alcatrazcruises.com for $30 per person. After booking your tickets, make sure to print them and don't forget to bring them with you. Alcatraz tour boats sail from Pier 33, don’t be late as they leave right on time. If you are driving, give yourself enough time to find parking as there is no parking ... read more

If you are a true 70's child or a wanna-be long lost Hippy, you need to see this town... Victorian houses, squashed up against each other, so much vibrancy & colour. A city with enormous character & personality...the complete antithesis of Los Angeles, which has none of the above. Did the obligatory tour across the Golden Gate. It was surreal, looking at something in the real that I have grown up looking at only on TV. Alcatraz was amazing. If you ever get here, it's a must. Freezing cold & full of ghosts with famous names..."Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert "The Birdman" Stroud, Al Capone...these guys really did time here. None of them escaped but Clint Eastwood did.... read more

hello world... As you can see we got to Alcatraz today. Hubs and I have never been there and neither have our daughters, so the aim was to be out early today. e were up at 6am and grabbed a quick breakfast (amid a small amount of drama...) then we headed out early. Catching the "F" line all the way to Fisherman's Market, we took the ride right through to the end and ended up just outside the wharf we needed for our Alcatraz tour. We were there about 8.30am and grabbed coffee at the cafe there and took a quick look at the miniature buildings and were ready to line up at 9.30am - you definitely need to be there about half an hour beforehand so you can collect your tickets. The initial lineup is ... read more
