Alcatraz Island

Another great pick! We took a night tour of Alcatraz hoping to catch some beautiful views of the night skyline in the bay. As soon as we left the pier, of course, a thick, heavy fog rolled in around us. Now, although this ruined our hopes of seeing the city light up at night, or actually seeing anything at all it was so thick, it did shroud the island in mystery and enhance the feeling of isolation which made the trip.

Alcatraz is run by the National Parks Service and is really a top notch park. We did the audio tour of the cell block and got to experience the life of the inmates through their words and the guards'. The isolation block was really not a great place to be...The island itself is really interesting as far as the terrain and hearing about the lives of those who lived on Alcatraz as employees of the prison and thier families was something I had never thought about. The guide said that they had quite the social life and were a really close knit community.
