Last month when I was on my business travel, I had to stop over at Sacramento on some work. It was done earlier than expected and so I had an entire day to relax and enjoy. I thought of taking a day trip and visit some of the important places. Here is an account of how I spent my day at Sacramento:
I am not really a morning person and so I took a while to get up and get dressed. My day started with a leisurely brunch at Magpie. This is one of those farm-to-fork spots that serve food made of seasonal ingredients, most of them produced locally. I had an Avocado toast and a local mushroom omelet, while sipping on some orange juice.
With a stomach full of delicious food, I decided to walk it up to the Capitol Building
. The old architecture, the tree-lined streets, and the wonderful weather made it all worth the effort. After enjoying my early afternoon stroll at the Capitol Park, I checked out all the levels of the capital building and even paid a visit to the California State Senate
and Assembly Chambers.
My next stop from there was the California State Railroad Museum where I got to saw all of the 21 gorgeous steam locomotives. The simulator train became my personal favorite. A little sleepy that I was, I decided it was time for some fresh coffee. I went straight into the L Street alley, and made my stop at Old Soul Co, a café that does its own coffee roasting.
No trip is every complete without some window shopping, which I just had to do. I visited some of the local clothing boutiques such as Heart and Sugar Shack where the staff was more than pleased to help me find what I wanted.
I then took a stroll within the city cemetery, enjoying the weather and the beautiful grounds. I saw many volunteers tending to the grounds and couldn’t help lending a hand. I even discovered a couple of graves with some interesting stories. I must say their Adopt-a-Plot program is surely paying off.
By now it was time for an early dinner and a movie. So it was Tower theatre and Tower Café which was luckily, just up the street. Today I decided my dinner had to be Italian. A Visit to the Hot Italian, which was full of well-dressed Italians made me feel as if I was right there in Italy. I ordered a Ligabue (a thin-crust, pesto pizza) and then a Gelato
to end it. I decided to give the movie a skip.
Before hitting the hotel I thought I needed a beer or two and so I went to the Dive Bar. To my surprise I actually saw live mermaids swimming in the giant aquarium right above the bar. That was really a sight to behold.
I was late for my flight when I reached back my hotel. Thankfully I ran a Google search on shuttle Sacramento to SFO
and found myself an airport taxi that took me to the airport while the boarding was still on. I would definitely do another trip to Sacramento during the next few months and I decide to spend some more time at this wonderful place. You should too!
