Today we got up around 7AM, another very early start. We all had showers and breakfast then jumped into the van to do some hiking around Redwood National Park. We drove to an information centre to find some elk hanging around in the field so we took the best photos we could without getting too close. We headed over to the information centre but it wasn’t open yet so we drove back down the road for a bit and did a short hike in the meantime. It was less than a mile, we did a circle and saw a massive sequoia tree, it was absolutely huge. It took 20min before we hopped into the van and headed back to the information centre. This time the other trek group were there taking photos of the elk and ... read more

Today we were heading for Redwood National Park, most of us had never heard of it so we didn't know what to expect. We got up and got ready, meeting the rest of the group in the hotel lobby while Jon went to get the van. We threw our stuff into the trailer and drove....and we drove for miles and miles. In fact nearly all of today was driving to Redwood National Park so there wasn't too much else that happened. We didn't get to our campsite until late afternoon, at this particular campsite we were setup right next to the other trek group. We unpacked, put up our tents and setup our campsite. We were here for two nights, our first camping stop more than one night. Also tonight was our first night that we ... read more

Driving up US 101 the landscape changes back from the warm fields of southern California and one dominated by tall, shady evergreens, a prelude to the drops in temperature and increased precipitation we can expect the further we head up the Pacific coast. It's a welcome sight to be sure, certainly one familiar to a Northwest native, but also a clear indication that our trip is quickly coming to a close. There's just enough left for a last hurrah before we turn the engine key one last time and gun it towards our final destination. On Friday we stopped in Leggett, not much of a town really, but the campground at Standish-Hickey Recreation Area was a convenient stopping point despite the long line of boats and trucks pulled up around us. They seemed to be incredibly ... read more

Again woke to a clear day, however the air was very cold and there had been a thick dew. Went mountain biking again. Rode another costal loop. It started with a wopping good downhill and then flattened out running parallel to the beach, through bog, mud and rivers. After a scenic ride along the coast line it ducked up a gravel road and then up again onto a green trail well covered with leaves. Overall I would give the ride a 7.5/10. 25 km’s in total. We headed down to the Redwoods, stopping for lunch by a pounding surf beach. You don’t swim in the beaches that face directly out to the Pacific ocean. The rips will kill you if hypothermia doesn’t first. The Redwood forest was an excellent drive. We decided to ignore the high ... read more
