Napa Valley Wine Tasting
This is a guide a created based on our many adventures in Napa for a weekend getaway. My in-laws live in San Jose so it's very convenient.
Stay at Best Western Plus Inn At The Vines (Closest Airport Oakland international 39 miles). Great location in town with nice rooms and a jacuzzi. Save your money for food and beverage.

Here are three possible Wine Tasting Day trips for the Napa Area. The wineries and eateries tend to be near lots of other options so feel free to deviate. Drinking water and eating food are not optional if you wish to survive.

Day 1 - Silverado Trail

Leave early 8:30am - Breakfast at the Napa General Store (540 Main St.) 8-6, located on the Napa River

As you head north on the Silverado Trail there are dozens of wineries. You will cover the most ground on this day (28 miles). Pick 2 or 3 to visit before lunch. A good strategy is to share tastings. You can always order more of your favorites later.

Reynold Family Winery (3266 Silverado Trail, opens at 10am)
Miner Family Winery (7850 Silverado Trail, closes at 5)
Staggs Leap Winery (5766 Silverado Trail, opens at 10am, $15 tasting fee)
Rutherford Hill (200 Rutherford Hill Road)

1pm - Lunch at Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen (1327 Railroad Ave. St. Helena) Make a reservation *

Sterling (1111 Dunaweal Ln.) Gondola ride to the top, great views of the valley, $29 per person, closes at 4:30pm
Castello di Amorosa (4045 Helena Hwy. Calistoga) 13th Century Tuscan castle, $25 per person, closes at 6pm

Dinner at Rutherford Grill (1180 Rutherford Road.) call way ahead for a reservation, closes at 9:30pm

Day 2 – Napa Road towards Sonoma

Breakfast at Sunflower Café (421 1st St. W. Sonoma) 7-4, Artsy breakfast and lunch spot in town

Gunlach Bundschu (2000 Denmark St.) $10 open 11 to 5:30
Ravenswood Winery (18701 Gehricke Rd.) 10-4:30
Robledo Family (21901 Bonness Road) 10-5

Lunch at Maya Restaurant (101 E Napa St. Sonoma) 11:30-9, Fun Mexican spot in town

Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyard (23555 Arnold Dr.) 10-5
Cline Cellars (24737 Arnold Dr.) 10-5
Jacuzzi Family (24724 Arnold Dr.) $10 open 10-5:30, they also have olive tasting

Day 3 – Walking the St. Helena Road

Breakfast at Oxbow Market (610 First Street) – Here you can get breakfast and find sandwiches, snacks and water to take on the road. Bring a soft cooler bag. A small cutting board and knife will also come in handy depending on the snacks you get. You can probably find one to buy if you forget. Also look at the restaurant menu; you may want to come back to Oxbow for dinner.

It’s a 1 mile walk from the 1st winery to the last. They are listed in order from north to south. You will appreciate the 5-10 minute walk after tasting. You may get some stares from people passing in limos as you walk. Stop anywhere to snack and eat. There are a lot of wineries so shared tasting is recommended. If you make it to 5 it’s a good day.

Foley Johnson (7801 St. Helena) 10-5
Sequoia Grove (8338 St. Helena) 10:30-5
Cakebread (8300 St. Helena) 10-4
Turnbull (8210 St. Helena) 10-5
Nickel and Nickel (8164 St. Helena) 9-3
Opus One (7900 St. Helena) 10-4
Robert Mondavi (7801 St. Helena) 10-5
