We'd had enough of National Parks by now so we decided to head for the coast at Monterey a few hours drive south of San Francisco. This was probably the nicest town/city we visited in the US. We camped for three nights at the town's campsite up the hill 45 mins walk from the Marina. Sara- We explored the small seaside resort and the highlight was the Monterey Aquarium. All the critters were mainly local and they had a thing for jelly fish (although we're not entirely sure that most of the 'tanks' weren't just monitors with groovy screensavers). We got down with the kids and watched feeding time at penguin central and otter island. However our favourite interactive activity was stroking the Bat Rays who seemed to like it. (Although later in the cafe my ... read more

this is practice for our trip to South America- will add a picture as soon as I can. Monterey was beautiful and easy to travel in by foot. They have trolleys that go to all the tourist destinations-- Fisherman's wharf, Aquarium, plaza, etc. Gary and I are busy getting things ready to leave on April 28th. House sitter fell through, so we're working on plan B. maybe plan c. We're shopping today for 'thinsulate' clothing to wear under the other stuff. Hard for me to imagine packing lite, but after pulling around the suitcases in Monterey, I got a taste of what I'm in for. ... read more

The sun came up Thursday morning and our spirits went up with it. We got into Yosemite by 9am and hiked up into the Mariposa Grove of ancient Sequoias in knee-deep snow. The kids did really well - both were very determined to see what was billed as the oldest living tree, estimated to be between 1800 and 2700 years old, the Grizzly Giant. The hike was 3.3 miles one-way. Renee didn't complain about being tired until we were well on our way back. A short ride on her dad's shoulders seemed to cure her. Keith didn't complain at all. Total hike was over 10 km. Bodes well for the all-day hike we plan in New Zealand. It was wonderfully quiet except for the snow falling plop! off the trees, in some cases hundreds of feet. Renee ... read more

Patrice and I packed up my Pathfinder early this morning for our drive up to Monterey to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We left really early at about 5am for the 4-5 hour drive up to Monterey. It was around 10am when we finally arrived and we headed straight for the Aquarium. It was not yet even noon and we were already sweating while standing in line waiting to be let in. We didn't really come dressed for the weather as it was quite overcast back home. Today in Monterey, the temperatures were going to climb into the upper 90's! We finally got in and spent the next 2 hours walking around the aquarium and checking out all the great exhibits and tanks. I've been here many times before but I always am fascinated ... read more

I get up early. I don't why, although I am conscience of the fact that we have another big day ahead of us. I take advantage of that the fact that the others are asleep to write a few postcards, post them and look around town for a travel agent. It's time for me to pay for those sins and book the flights from Vegas to San Francisco. When I return from my stroll around Monterey's clean and humble town centre it has become clear that we are in for a very hot day. We climb into 'the beast', which is almost on fire, but then realise we have left something in one of the rooms. The owner of the motel has gone to lunch or some such, so we rely on the trust of the ... read more

It's a nippy but sunny day. With nothing really planned for the day, Lam, Frances, and I decided to have a picnic.... hmm..... how about Monterey? The sun should be nice to warm us up. We got to Monterey by late morning, and decided to set up "shop" in a little park by the water. We took out our cheese, fruit, bread, olives, smoke salmon, and little red wine and had a real good lunch. We also brought a portable gas stove and bottled water, so we had a hot cup of tea to warm us up. We then rented a "quadracycle", a four-wheel vehicle powered by pedal power. The vehicle seats three, and perfect for our little ride. We rode along the shoreline and enjoyed the scenery. After pedal-power, we went back into our ... read more

For the most part, my business trips while working at NAVFAC were of one week duration, particularly those that took me to te West Coast. Monday and Friday would be travel days with Tuesday through Thursday as work days. However, in August 1996 I attended a two week course on Environmental Law in Port Hueneme CA which gave me a two day weekend. Never one to waste two days, especially on the California coast, I and a collague of mine decided to take a road trip up the Pacific Coast Highway. 10 August 1996 Saturday. We left Port Hueneme quite early as we had set an ambitious itinerary for ourselves. We caught US101 in Ventura headed north, passing Santa Barbara, one of my favorite spots to eat when on one week trips. Our first stop was ... read more
