We decided to stay book another night in the smelly room rather than moving on. Besides, we're really close to the peninsular and the 17-Mile Drive. I saw a rather disconcerting notice near our room this morning, stating there are cancer-causing chemicals present at the facility! So, it's not really a 20-year old carpet smell at all, it's noxious gases permeating the building and killing us all. I asked the receptionist and she said the State requires businesses to provide warnings prior to exposing visitors to chemicals known to cause cancer; it's probably because of the hot tub chemicals they use. Still, not the best advertisement for a comfortable stay. Steve wanted to go back to the gun shop we popped into yesterday, so we wandered up the road in the morning. It's incredible to think ... read more

It's about 21:30 hrs here and Steve is doing serious zzzed's after driving from SF airport. We're in a VERY smelly motel room in Monterey, just along the coast down from SF (when I say just, I mean about 100 miles away... but that's peanuts-driving in America (don't tell Steve I said that). I've opened all the windows but nothing's going to get rid of this 20-year-old-carpet smell... This morning we were up again early doors and we were pleasantly surprised to see several cafe's open along Chestnut Street, so we grabbed a bite to eat to start the day. Across the road from the cafe, in 'Crunch Fitness', mad people were pounding away on running machines way before any signs of daybreak... The Californian quest for everlasting health and vitality? Sod that... We'd reserved a ... read more

Hello everyone, I hope for those of you who are down in the southern hemisphere that things aren’t too cold yet. I’ve just got back from my summer holiday and will cover the goings on in my next 2 blogs (they wont be too far apart). But since im a bit of a slacker at updating this blog ill bring you up to speed as to what happened before I left in “Matt’s Super Fun Summer Vacation - Part 1” It must be about 6 weeks or so ago now, but Jesse scored some tickets to one of our local baseball teams home games. Id been asking Jesse for a while if she wanted to go, but she wasn’t all that keen as the local team is terrible. But her work got an allocation of tickets ... read more

Like pioneers traveling westward on wagon train, we too are thrilled to finally see the Pacific Ocean. It's been a long time coming. The salty sea-breeze, the familiar wail of sea-gulls, the methodical crashing of waves up against the rocky shores below. In many ways the trip seems somehow complete even though we remain hundreds of miles away from our destination. It's almost too familiar. Where are the white sandy beaches, the sun-bronzed Californians hitting the surf? Outside the wind is whipping and it is cold. After pulling off the road at a public beach, we pull out our fleeces, head down to the surf and snap a few obligatory photos as if to say "Hurray! We made it! Here's proof! Now lets get back in the car before we freeze!" and high-tail it back to ... read more

- Right-On, Emil. Dagen i dag tog vi som planlagt i Monterey Aquarium, som er et "must" for alle der kommer inden for en radius af en times rejsetid. Det er et af steder jeg tidligere har besøgt, som jeg synes ... read more

Hej! Mads her. I dag skulle vi forlade San Francisco, snøft, snøft , og skulle til Monterey med akvarium og det hele, HURRA! .

We're up early this morning, but not as early as some bikers! They're not your usual bikers, they're a bunch of 'seniors' as they like to call OAP's here and they're jostling for brekkie! I never imagined having to fight a grandpa in spandex over a toasted bagel! Kev as usual is no help, he's just giggling himself stupid. After managing to scavenge some coffee we retreat to our room and munch bagels while watching (well we would watch if there weren't so many bloody adverts), Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I pack up and we check out, today we're off to Fisherman's Wharf for some whale watching. We arrive in plenty of time, dressed in our many layers and armed with flasks of coffee, only to be met by a 'TOUR CANCELLED' sign. Apparently there ... read more

Today we set off from LA to Monterey. After waiting for ages at Alamo as their computers aren't working, we pick out our Pontiac GT. It's nice, it's very nice and it goes very very fast. The speed is wasted as the speed limit is 65 in all the states we're visiting. We set the Sat Nav for Monterey and drive via Pacific Coast Highway. Kev pulls over in Santa Monica so I can take photos of the pier, it's the one used in the Lost Boys and makes me feel like I'm a teenager again. As we drive up the beach I spot a Taco Bell and as we missed breakfast, it's chicken burritos at 10.30am! We leave Santa Monica, still on Pacific Coast Highway, drive through Malibu and gawp at the beautiful beach ... read more

We were headed to Monterey after San Francisco, but it was not going to be an easy journey. Of course, our train was early, and we had to get to Oakland station. To get to Oakland from our hostel, we had to get up at 6am and walk 4 blocks to catch the BART to central Oakland. You would think this would be enough, but no -- we then had to find a bus and catch that to the Amtrak station. Our train was meant to leave at 8.40am from the Amtrak station, and we arrived at 8.10am just incase, as this was a train we did not want to miss. But as you guessed there had to be a problem (as I am Veira, and when the Veira's travel something has to go wrong ... read more
