Day 2 ! Max and Emily went to school today and we walked with Sarah into downtown Los Gatos, a little over a mile on a lovely walking path along the creek. We enjoyed delicious guacamole for lunch and were introduced to the Mexican drink called horchata - must learn how to make it!! Finished with fantastic cookies at Icing on the Cake! The rest of the day we spent at Sharks Ice Arena in San Jose. M & E both had lessons - we really enjoy watching them as they gain proficiency on the ice!... read more

We had sweet morning in Mt. Shasta, but we were ready to leave the snow far behind us. Geoff got us to Redding safe and sound through snow and rain. We got to walk across the infamous Sundial Bridge designed by Spanish Architect, Santiago Calatrava. (thanks for the idea, Lawrence!) It was fun but very wet. Then the adventure got even more interesting - I got behind the wheel and drove us toward Los Gatos. It was all steady until about an hour or two from our destination when the highway doubled in size and all the exits lead you to more highways - I had enough. We were even going to stop at the Jelly Belly Factory but it was raining and traffic-y and I cried, "I don't know where I'm going." Then Captain Geoff ... read more

Well, About a week and a half ago, I went around to all the Elementary Schools in my area and asked the Librarians if they had any books that they wanted to donate to the African Library Project. I got about three books on those initial visits and I gave my name and number to all the Librarians so they could call me if they came across any books they thought would be useful to me. I then asked my mom to talk to the Librarian at Lakeside Elementary School, where she works part time, and she came home a couple days later with a stack of books and another stack a few days after that! I also returned to Redwood Middle School (my first visit was the same day as the rest of the schools), ... read more

Today is the beginning of something I hope will be a continuous activity from here on out in my life. My friends (Ben and Edgar) and I are going to go hike at St. Joseph Hill in Los Gatos, CA. One night, Ben and I got into some serious talking of just doing more in our lives and seizing the day; hence, carpe diem. We came to the conclusion to do something out of the ordinary of our routine life and go somewhere once a week. This week we decided to go hiking on a trail in the Los Gatos area. This is the second time that I go hiking and I'm excited. There is more that I wish to say but we are leaving soon as my neighbors, Ben and Edgar, are banging at my ... read more

So I've been searching for about 4-5 months for the "right place" to go for my travel. I decided in about February or so that i didn't want to go to college right away and that instead i wanted to do something radical and different. I talked to lots of people and looked at lots of websites and couldn't find anything that sounded just perfect. I looked on a bunch of websites for orphanages in Ghana, i looked at the Peace Corps, i looked at Habitats for Humanity, the Hunger Project, the Heiffer Project, and lots of different stuff but none of it called out to me. A lot of the things i looked at were situations where you pay the company for a certain amount of time in their country and then you go there, ... read more

July 11th in New Zealand: A slow mellow day of packing and last minute shopping. We met Stacey's mom at Season for a last NZ hot chocolate in the drizzle. I was exhausted from those two bottles of wine last night- one with Paul and Stacey's yummy roast, and then one with Kelly at The Living Room while we waited for the South African. I may have gotten a little more sleep if the cab driver had known where Stacey's street was...he had to use a map!! At the airport Stacey and Rueban came in to look in the shops for a bit, and then we said godobye. Kelly and I ate a bit before she boarded, and she helped me pick out "Labrynth" to read on the plane. It's thicker than a Schama. On the ... read more

One Week To Go!! The report cards are 95% done, the classroom is neater, the cat sitters are ready to go, I've dragged out my pack, called TravelEx about picking up New Zealand currency, almost booked the first week of travel on the North Island, and set up my travel blog! (WELCOME! And ENJOY!) I've waited four years for this trip, and I am so excited to see Sarah and finally meet Justin.
