The Evening It was going to be a long night. We were returning home to Canberra from England on a Air NZ flight via LA and Auckland after being on the road for five weeks. Two legs were over nine hours, and they other two would add another five hours. Almost a complete day in the air! Our seats were quite close to the front of the aircraft, just forward of the door we boarded through, and several seats around us were unoccupied for the London to LA leg, so we were expecting a quiet time. It was not to be. At first we didn't notice the woman in the centre seats just in front of us. There was nothing obviously unusual about her, even when she was escorted back from the front cabin by ... read more

After a tough game of beach soccer, it is customary to go for a post-game analysis at the closest place that serves beer. Ok, maybe not, but that's the outcome of this particular game of Swedes versus locals. One local joins our little group of Scandinavians. He's not from California. Moved out there to catch a break. Pretty much like everyone else in LA. "So what do you do for a living?". "I'm a professional bum" is his rehearsed and completely unshy answer. It's almost with a sense of pride he tells that he used to sleep on the beach or wherever he could, before finding (and being able to afford) an apartment. He's waiting to catch the big break as an actor - duh! He's had a few minor roles, the "biggest" one being in ... read more

Gameday in Los Angeles. Game six of the final series LA Lakers - Philadelphia Sixers 2001. The setting is ideal for a good time. Warm and sunny, party on the rooftop in LA. Barbecue and beer. The excitement of the game does however not mount to any hights. The Sixers have nothing really to put up against the Lakers. Shaq, Kobe, and the others land the second consecutive NBA title in LA. The Spanish guy co-hosting the party shares my grudges against the Lakers. Right after the final bell rings he opens the window and screams in despair: "Philadelphia!". Despite the sometimes unprovoked, meaningless violence prevalent in the US, this can pass by unnoticed. Just out of curiosity, although I know the answer very well, I ask the dude from Madrid: "Would you do that in ... read more

Having been in LA for six months -- for work -- my coworjers and I got all the time in the world to paint the town red. We did not mind spending a few extra bucks to spend weekends in every nook and cranny of LA; besides, our friend Dessa so generously took us around. We owe her. A lot. And the experience... it was all worth it! Allow me to list the places we have been to: * Universal Studios * Hollywood * Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park * Santa Monica Pier * University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) * Griffith Park * The Getty Museum Universal Studios I remember watching Rey Langit's TV show long ago. And I still remember how I envied him for strolling along the streets of Universal Studios. I ... read more

A night at the Roxbury. They told us the place was pretty nice. And it was pretty nice. We didn't have any problems getting in, as did the two nerdy guys in the movie a few years later. Maybe the dinner reservation for 40 people helped us get in the door. The upstairs dancefloor is alright. Pretty big, pretty average. I try to make conversation with the cute American girl standing right next to me. It's not going very well. Not until the DJ plays Ace Of Base, and I mention that I'm from the same country as they are, she joins in the conversation. She may or may not think I'm part of the band, since I mentioned it. In any event, she isn't very impressed, although she's being polite all the way. "What Is ... read more

We headed out to LAX again, on board America West flight 2043. I was in coach seat 7A on the 737-300 aircraft. Just as the day before, we went over to the Japan Airlines counter to try for Tokyo again. This time we would be successful. We had an enjoyable flight on board JAL flight 063, a 747-200 to Narita. I was in coach seat 56J. In Tokyo, we just stayed in the airport and awaited our connection to Hong Kong. As an aviation enthusiast, I was very excited to be flying into Kai Tak airport. Our connecting flight was on board Japan Airlines 735, which was a 747-400. I was in coach seat 35K and slept most of the way, just waking for the dinner only. The food on JAL was fantastic! I had a ... read more

Or so we thought........ One of my co-workers was going to Hong Kong to visit family and invited me along. We left Las Vegas on America West flight 2043, a 737-300 bound for Los Angeles. I was in first class seat 1C for the hour long flight west. Once in LA, we went over to the Tom Bradley terminal for our flight to Tokyo. As airline employees, we fly stand-by and today was not our day. We tried the two Japan Airlines flights to Narita and they were both full. We went back to America West and took flight 2470, an Airbus 320, back to Las Vegas. Once again, we were given seats in first class and I was in seat 2F. In Las Vegas, we went to our homes and would meet the next morning ... read more
