(Victory Ranch) If you're in an area that isn't supposed to get above zero today, and that's without counting windchill, you may want to just skip over this entry! Come back and read it in May or June! This is a rain update: We’re on the seventh consecutive day of rain. This morning at devotions we were discussing (as opposed to whining!) to the camp director about the rain, and the thought that this area was in a drought. He said this is the most rain they’ve had for years…and the weather reporters confirm that. Well, the residents are probably a lot more thrilled about it than those of us sitting on mobile foundations are! On the way to our meeting room this morning I told Bob I wanted to get some pictures of the creek ... read more

(Victory Ranch) Yesterday I mentioned that it was supposed to rain. There’s a winter storm warning for this weekend~~in southern California that means RAIN!!! It started last night, and came in sheets throughout the night, and by this morning the creek, which I showed a couple weeks ago as having a hard-sand base, was gushing. Just from one night of rain! The heaviest rain occurs west of us, along the coast, but even a little rain (and this was more than a little) has such an impact. On our way to church the streets were running with water, and the fields were flooded, and rain was still coming. Yep, the FLOOD signs were everywhere! A few weeks ago I made fun of the fact that they had the signs so ready; now I understand why they ... read more

Victory Ranch We had some big excitement this week~~the cement truck came so the guys could pour the new sidewalks! Paul and Bill have been putting up forms for some walks around the new rec building, as well as a handicap ramp, and everyone has been waiting for the cement pour and the weather, to work together. I’ll include some pictures of the truck. We watched for a while, but had a fence that really needed to be finished oiling. (It’s supposed to rain again this weekend~~drag out the FLOOD signs!) On Friday we went to Victorville (65 miles north of us) to meet with teams on an RVICS project at east of Barstow. Bea and Barney are on that project, so it was fun to see them again, and although the other couples were new ... read more

(Victory Ranch) Wow it’s been a long time since I’ve made an entry! We women are finished painting upstairs in the hotel, and the men are pretty much finished with their roofing, and swamp cooler work. Peter is still working on the carts, trucks, tractors…anything with a motor. The weather has been very nice, cool in the mornings, warm in the afternoon,. We’ve had bits of rain off and on, but no big deal. They didn’t even bother putting out the Flood signs! But here’s the high point to our week: Bob and I went to the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament in Palm Desert. Our tickets allowed us to go all six days, but because we have this demanding work schedule (just joking!) we could only go on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is ... read more

(Victory Ranch) Today our tour took us to Palm Desert where we spent most of the day in the Living Desert Park. It’s something that Bob and I would never have picked to do, and yet was so interesting. It told about the plants and terrain of the desert, but also about the animals. When they are talking desert, they’re referring to the American southwest, Mexico, as well as Africa, so there were giraffes, ostriches, warthogs (who are so ugly you have to feel sorry for them. AND they smell bad!) and many more. There was wildlife show that was featuring falcons and eagles. One of the most impressive stops was the animal hospital; it is 24,000 sq ft, and can house more than 450 animals, large and small. While the vets are working on the ... read more

(Victory Ranch) I don’t have a group picture to show you yet, but we are going to take one Sunday, so I’ll introduce everyone then. The women have been painting the upstairs of the office building, which is a hotel that was built in the 1880s. They don’t use the upstairs for guests, as it doesn’t meet code, but it is used for storage, and can be seen from the lobby where the guests enter. The wood work is gorgeous~~that old kind that has so much character. The paint really makes the woodwork stand out. The men are planting trees where some of them were blown down, as well as roofing…well they’re not really roofing yet, but they are prepared for the shingles to arrive. They stripped the old ones, and then tried to talk ... read more

We are back at Victory Ranch, for part two of our project. I want to tell you about the changes here, but first let me describe the trip to Montana. We took a gambler’s flight from Las Vegas to Billings…now if you live a sheltered life(!) and don’t know what that is, it’s a cheap flight that gets you from one place to Vegas…only. No frills, and the flight attendants don’t waste a lot of their time on niceties, but did I mention that they’re cheap flights? The National Rodeo Finals was going on in Vegas at that time, and our flight was an hour and a half late leaving (they had to do a scheduled check on the plane~~I'm not opposed to aircraft checks, but wouldn’t you think they’d schedule it when they don’t have ... read more

How can it be December 1 already??? I'm very lax in writing lately, and it's not really because nothing's going on, but more like Santa stuff is going on! But now Mrs. Claus is ready to go home! This is the last week of our project; Dave and Wanda and Bob and I will be staying on for the month of January. Earl and Nancy are moving on to a project in Phoenix. We’ll all go our separate ways for December. Our tour last week was to a historic farm, where we were shown weaving, churning, blacksmithing, and had a lesson in a classroom, among other things. The instructors we in period dress, as well as their speech. It was very fun to do, and was what I expected our tour to Columbia (near Tuolumne) ... read more

Friday Bob and I went to Palm Springs. It’s about 50 miles from here, and we traveled with four lanes, both directions, of our closest friends. Well not really our closest friends, but we traveled very close. And they weren’t really our friends, nor did we want them to be! I just can’t get used to the number of people out here. It’s desert from here to Palm Springs, and even once you get there, there’s not much more than desert. It’s not like on the other side of the mountains where at least the lawns and things are green~~here nothing is green. There are palm trees, which I find sooo interesting, but there isn’t any lawn. And where the fancy houses are, they build walls around them, and I assume they create a pleasant ... read more
